TechNews - The Samsung 750 EVO - tech
(hx) 01:39 AM CEST - Apr,26 2016 - Post a comment / read (8)
  • Intel Optane Demo - File Transfer at 2GB/s - It is great to see XPoint / Optane technology being demonstrated again, but as far as demos go, this was not the best / fairest example that Intel could have put together. First of all, the 'NAND SSD' they are using is a Thunderbolt 3 connected external, which was clearly bottlenecked badly somewhere else in the chain (when was the last time you saw a 6 Gbit SATA SSD limited to only 283 MB/s). Also, using SATA for the NAND example while using PCIe x4 NVMe for the Optane example seems a bit extreme to me.
  • AMD Polaris 10 Allegedly Performs Close To A GTX 980 Ti - The crew at WCCFTech have posted what they claim are leaked specs showing the upcoming AMD Polaris performing close to a GTX 980 Ti.
  • The Samsung 750 EVO (120GB & 250GB) SSD Review: A Return To Planar NAND -  The Samsung 750 EVO is a drive for a limited audience. It is intended for use as the primary boot drive of a system that will not be subjected to particularly intense storage workloads, and the limited capacity options preclude using it to hold a large game or multimedia library. Seen through this lens, the 750 EVO offers great performance for a budget drive. The peak performance of the 750 EVO is close to the Samsung 850 EVO and even the 850 Pro in many cases. On tests simulating lighter real-world usage the 750 EVO is generally the fastest budget TLC drive and also sometimes competes well against low-end MLC drives.
  • Acer's Liquid Zest Plus Packs 5,000mAh Battery - Acer has provided a preview of the Liquid Zest Plus, an Android phone that features a 5,000mAh battery with Quick Charge support that provides "days" of uptime. Other than the battery, the Liquid Zest Plus includes an average feature set, including a 5.5-inch HD screen, MediaTek processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. The phone's main camera has a 13-megapixel sensor with laser-assisted and phase detection autofocus. The 5-megapixel selfie camera has a wide angle of view. The phone ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Acer could not confirm pricing details, nor could it say if the phone will be sold in the U.S.
  • Gold Wires and Electrolyte Gel Improve Battery Longevity - Researchers at the University of California at Irvine say they've found a way to increase the number of charge cycles a battery has from a few thousand to more than 200,000. Their discovery could lead to batteries that can be recharged repeatedly for years without losing capacity, which his something that happens with today's lithium-ion batteries. The researchers coated gold nanowire with manganese oxide and a layer of electrolyte gel. The gel and manganese oxide prevent corrosion. The nanowire holds the charge. The longer the wire, the greater the charge contained within. Using gel, rather than liquid, is what provided the breakthrough in this case, but the researchers don't yet fully understand the mechanism behind their discovery. The researchers' next steps include making a true battery from the gold-and-gel combo, discerning the mechanism of action, and then testing if other materials can be substituted for the gold. Adding gold to batteries, even in small quantities, would add to their cost. The researchers did not say if or when their discovery might be commercialized in consumer products.
  • Verizon to Kick Off HTC 10 Preorders April 29 - Verizon Wireless has said it will begin accepting preorders for the HTC 10 on April 29. Verizon expects the phone to launch in early May and has not yet provided pricing details for the phone. Verizon is giving consumers the opportunity to test the HTC 10 in retail stores, also starting on April 29. Verizon says the 10 will include its HD Voice service and WiFi Calling. The phone includes several Verizon offers, such as three free months of HBO Now, credit for handset trade-ins, and ETF payoffs for customers who switch to Verizon. An unlocked version of the HTC 10 is already available for sale directly from HTC.com for $699.
  • Samsung and The Weather Channel Team Up for Galaxy App - Samsung and The Weather Channel have created an exclusive weather app only for owners of Galaxy-branded smartphones. The Weather Channel App for Samsung offers features the regular Weather Channel app does not include. For example, a tool called Smart Weather Wakeup will trigger users' alarm clocks a bit earlier than normal when bad weather may impact their routine. Another tool called Floating Shortcuts provides direct access to information such as current conditions or daily forecasts. The app includes new, dynamic weather backgrounds for Samsung phones, and targets Galaxy Edge models with customized alerts for the edge panel. The Weather Channel App for Samsung is available from the Galaxy Apps Store for the S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, Note 5, S7, and S7 Edge. Samsung said it plans to eventually expand the app's availability to other platforms, including the Gear S2 smartwatch and select Samsung Smart TVs.

  • Future of self-driving cars? - Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Note the car pauses at 0:07 while cameraman gets out of the way...
  • 4K View Of Planet Earth -  This view from the International Space Station is awe inspiring. NASA needs to start making these longer and more loop friendly so you can just kick back and relax while the video plays over and over.
  • Total Internal Reflection (Laser Waterfall) - Place water in a glass bottle with a few drops of Dettol. By pointing a laser beam at an angle you can show Total Internal Reflection. In this case the incident ray will strike the water surface, bend and will be reflected back. You can also show that the beam bends towards the normal when it goes from air to water.

Forgot some news stories there Hx.. Let me help..

http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey - Win10 and ATI vs nVidia. Nahhhh not news worthy right. Well, not if you own an ATI and want to try and act smart about Win10, right Koogle and Csimbi. Cuz Win10 is shit.

Win 10 popularity growing
https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/01/04/windows-10-now-active-on-over-200-million-devices/
"outpacing Windows 7 by nearly 140% and Windows 8 by nearly 400%."

http://www.zdnet.com/article/when-it-comes-to-windows-10-privacy-dont-trust-amateur-analysts/ -
or his earlier article https://tweakhound.com/2015/09/29/looking-at-windows-10-privacy/
- or you can listen to amateurs like Koogle and Csimbi

Nvidia, the douchebags that overcharge for old tech, at it again, killing off production of cards that today still cost $500+ in favour of well, newer old hardware where concept cards exists in 2014... Thank god there's someone out there protecting consumers eh...
http://techreport.com/news/29999/rumor-nvidia-kills-some-maxwell-chips-ahead-of-june-pascal-launch
http://www.techpowerup.com/221783/nvidia-reportedly-stops-production-of-certain-maxwell-gpus

Of course your sites don't want to say anything because they don't want to lose out on getting free cards so they can market them "cough" review them...Or wait, you can buy ATI and feel like you have a great card. All depends on the reviewer/marketer I guess eh... Nvidia makes billions in profit every year, you think the cost of manufacturing would drop. I'm sure it does and Nvidia just uses that to make even more money. Because in this day and age of console ports to PC, PC is just so worth it especially when you can count on people with more money than brains.

Oh you're welcome Hx..

I'll give a go to Win10 after the first major update (which made Windows 7 usable, too).

As for ATI vs. Nvidia - it's not about the hardware, mostly.
It's about the rubbish software and non-existent support at ATI.
They shot themselves in the leg with those so people left them for good.
Now AMD is trying to repair that damage but guess what: they are far from it and noone gives a damn anymore.
There will be a new generation of people growing up eventually that might buy ATI, but they'll be sorely disappointed, too.
Vicious cycle and without serious changes at AMD, we know where that's going to lead.
I guess it's lucky for them that they could cut a deal with MS - I'm sure it was not because they were good, rather, because Nvidia was greedy so they lost the deal to AMD.

Win10 is easily usable. I've yet to have a single problem. It's been perfect and doesn't suffer long up-time performance issues that Win7 had. Still don't regret it and mine is the upgrade path from Win7. It really is a rock-solid OS.

I upgraded my video card recently and I really didn't want to but I wanted more FPS in some of my games and my wife's PC needed an upgrade so she took my card and I got another. It was really hard paying what they wanted, in fact I was major pissed off because the prices are bullshit and not just cuz the shit Canadian dollar. AMD may be cheaper, but you get what you pay for.

Koogle(10:33 AM CEST - Apr,28 2016 )
tom ur a fucking noob ofc winshit10 is usable for you, you are its perfect target audience.

Koogle(08:47 PM CEST - Apr,28 2016 )

See its not hard to get retarded dumb shits like toms genepool to upgrade to that fucking shit os.
