- Samsung's Galaxy Tab S 10.5 & 8.4 - 6.6mm Thin Tablets
Tested - From the very beginning you can tell
things are different with the Tab S. The Galaxy
Tab S will be available in two different sizes, both with a 16:10
aspect ratio: 10.5" and 8.4". Each size comes in two different colors:
dazzling white and titanium bronze. The Galaxy Tab S models are styled
quite similarly to the Galaxy S5. The front of the device features a
dedicated home button (with integrated fingerprint sensor), flanked by
recent apps and back buttons. The back of the device is covered in a
non-hyperglaze polycarbonate with a textured pattern that looks similar
to the back of the GS5. The actual back surface feels a bit smoother
than what you get on the GS5. At 6.6mm thick, both models of the Galaxy
Tab S are thinner than the iPad Air, iPhone 5s and Galaxy S5. Samsung
is able to leverage the extremely low profile afforded by its Super
AMOLED display to help drive chassis thickness to incredibly low
levels.
- Comcast is Working on a YouTube Clone - Cable TV company
Comcast plans to launch its own streaming video service that will
compete with Google's YouTube, the company confirmed today. The new
video service, which was first rumored back in March, will be available
through Comcast's X1 set-top box via a standalone app. And like
YouTube, it will allow people to upload their own videos. Comcast
senior vice president of video Matt Strauss confirmed
the news and told Gigaom that the company plans to launch the
service to a limited number of customers before the end of the year.
VentureBeat has reached out to Comcast for more details and will update
this post with any new information.

- AT&T Increases Activation Fee to $40 - AT&T
has bumped up the price of activating new equipment on two-year
plans from $36 to $40. The change went into effect June 8. The fee
doesn't apply to AT&T Next plans, though AT&T told Fierce
Wireless that heavy adoption of its early upgrade program played a role
in increasing the activation fee for those signing contracts. AT&T
spokesperson Mark Siegel claimed "there are administrative and other
costs associated with activating or upgrading a device" on two-year
plans. Sprint charges a $36 activation fee, Verizon charges a $35
activation fee (waived if customers sign up for Edge within two month),
and T-Mobile doesn't charge an activation fee at all for customers who
select a Simple Choice plan.
- The FBI maintains an 83-page glossary of Internet slang - The
Internet is full of bizarre and bewildering neologisms, that anyone
though a text-addled teen would onslaught to understand. So a fine,
taxpayer-funded people of a FBI - apparently not calm to trawl Urban
Dictionary, like a rest of us - gathered a glossary
of Internet slang.
An 83-page glossary. Containing scarcely 3,000 terms.
- Europe and Korea Look to Define 5G - The European
Commission and South Korea today announced
plans to together define the future 5G wireless standard, as well
as develop the technologies to support it. The two bodies signed a
Joint Declaration on Strategic Cooperation in Information
Communications Technology (ICT) and 5G to increase the discussions and
research around the topic. A wide number of companies will participate,
including Alcatel-Lucent, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Nokia, Orange,
Telecom Italia, Telenor, and Telefonica from Europe, as well as
Samsung, LG, SK Telecom, and others in Korea. One of the key ideas
behind 5G is not to just increase speeds, but to significantly boost
capacity.
