TechNews - GeForce GTX 480 and 470 final specs - tech
(hx) 10:30 AM CET - Mar,21 2010 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • GeForce GTX 480 and 470 final specs leaked - The chaps over at VR Zone claim to have gotten some leaked info about both the GeForce GTX 480 and 470 cards. The 470 model will have 1280 MB of memory for $349, according to their story, while the higher end 480 model will have 1536 MB of memory and cost $499. While these are not officially confirmed yet they do seem to be in line with previous speculation.
  • Intel DP55WB "Whitesburg" Motherboard Tested - This motherboard is obviously not perfect. What mainstream product is? Moreover, we can hardly say that it's the best in class. For example, the similarly priced Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 looks more attractive in terms of both features (eSATA, PATA, PS/2) and their implementation (6-channel CPU power circuitry, top-end audio codec). But then again Whitesburg is a bit cheaper
  • Windows 7 SP1 To Have 'Minor Updates' - For Windows 7, SP1 includes only minor updates, among which are previous updates that are already delivered through Windows Update. SP1 for Windows 7 will, however, deliver an updated Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of RemoteFX introduced in the server-side with SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Windows XP Mode Needs No Virtualization Hardware - Windows XP Mode no longer requires hardware virtualization technology to run, Microsoft emphasized in a March 18 post on its official Windows blog, the same day it announced a new partnership with Citrix Systems. The update can be downloaded from this Microsoft site. In theory, at least, a reduction in the amount of virtualization hardware would translate into streamlined IT budgeting and deployment for smaller companies that need Windows XP Mode for a few applications.
  • New password-stealing virus targets Facebook - Hackers have flooded the Internet with virus-tainted spam that targets Facebook's estimated 400 million users in an effort to steal banking passwords and gather other sensitive information. The emails tell recipients that the passwords on their Facebook accounts have been reset, urging them to click on an attachment to obtain new login credentials. If the attachment is opened, it downloads several types of malicious software, including a program that steals passwords.
  • Ubuntu 10.04 beta 1 released - Ubuntu, 10.04 beta 1 has been publicly released, based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. Ubuntu 10.04 beta 1 is loaded with updates and new features like GNOME 2.3, which gives developers and users ultimate control over their desktop, software and data. Mozilla also has been updated with the new default search engine set to Yahoo! - although users can set their home page to Yahoo! or Google, depending on their settings.
  • The Samsung PN50C8000 50-inch 3D Wi-Fi plasma to ship April 2nd and cost $2299 - Samsung's PN50C8000 50" 3D Wi-Fi Plasma TV will ship on April 2nd, and will cost $2300. The TVs support 3D with 4 HDMI 1.4 ports, but do not include 3D glasses (you can buy Samsung's 3D starter kit which includes two pairs for $350).
  • Sony's BDP-470 and BDP-570 3D Blu-ray players - Sony's BDP-470 and BDP-570 3D Blu-ray players are now shipping. The BDP-470 (which requires a firmware upgrade for 3D support) costs $190 and the BDP-570 costs $220. The S550 adds built-in Wi-Fi and can support DNLA via an upgrade.
  • The Shocking, Scandalous Details of the YouTube-Viacom Spat - This will be an interesting case.
  • Truck driver pushes car down road at 60mph and doesn't know (video) - A trucker drives along a motorway at 60mph unaware a car is trapped sideways on his front bumper. The scene was caught on a phone by people in another car.
  • Racy Photo Of French First Lady Up For Grabs - A cheeky 1992 Helmut Newton photo of his supermodel wife Carla Bruni goes on sale today at the Phillips de Pury auction house in London as part of a sex-themed collection.
  • Candice Swanpoel Does a Sexy Dance in Esquire - How do you get Victoria's Secret model Candice Swanepoel to dance for you?
  • Brooklyn Decker: Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover Girl 2010 - This year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover girl Brooklyn Decker modeled some sexy lingerie for the new line from Bare Necessities.

Movie "300" someone said .... this is madness.. 1536 MB GFX card costing the same as an average pc $499 ? Sometimes the temerity of these research and development teams never ceases to amaze me. They fail to recognise the global depression, maybe Obama's new healthcare reform will enable people to trade in a kidney or testicle in order to obtain these superfluous devices.

Btw off topic i'd like to say congratulations to the citizens of the U.S in adopting our biased NHS system, waiting lists you'll love em ...... good luck.

Ya prices are complete BS. Small innovation at high cost. Imagine how much they would make if they just outright cut cards to a cost of $250 for top of the line, 200 for one below etc etc. It's fucking stupid that a graphics card cost more than a whole PC. Totally agree.

My card is still doing well, I bought it for a fraction of the original cost(brand new) and I see no real need for a new card, based on games coming out and the fucking stupid pricing. The day I spend 500 sammolians on a video card is the day I check myself in. And right now, there's a lineup and Stumpus and Koogle are last in line. So I'll pass! Hahaha!

$500 for a top of the line launch card is cheap compared past card launches. As with any new product, and this is no secret...wait for it...the price comes down over time as economies of scale take hold.

I have to agree that while new tech is always interesting to me, I can't think of any good use for a new GTX. There is no games that demand it's power that interest me, and I don't think there will be for quite a while the way things are looking. The way it shall gobble power when idling is also of great distress to me. I would like to see some more earnest innovation in making these things more power efficient like the new intel chips (Core i series).

I will just use it's arrival to score myself a cheap 200 series second hand if I even bother with that. I've had this 8800GT for over two years now and I am still playing things happily at 1920x1200.
