- Adobe Issues Another Emergency Flash Update After Ransomware
Attacks - Adobe Systems Inc issued an
emergency update on Thursday to its widely used Flash software for
Internet browsers after researchers discovered a security flaw that was
being exploited to deliver ransomware to Windows PCs. The software
maker urged the more than 1 billion users of Flash on Windows, Mac,
Chrome and Linux computers to update the product as quickly as possible
after security researchers said the bug was being exploited in
"drive-by" attacks that infect computers with ransomware when tainted
websites are visited.
- Meet the new ransomware that knows where you live - A new
phishing campaign is sending thousands of ominous-looking emails
that contain the recipient's home address. The well-worded email
appears to come from a legitimate email address and domain name, and
raises very few irregularities. The email comes with an demand for
money for an arbitrary service, along with a link that purports to be
an "overdue invoice." Click that link and open the file (which looks
like a Word document), and you'll become the latest victim of
ransomware -- that is, malware that encrypts your files and locks you
out of your computer until you pay a ransom. The longer you wait, the
larger the ransom you have to pay.
- WhatsApp Secures Messages with End-to-End Encryption - WhatsApp
has updated its service with full end-to-end encryption. Now, the
latest version of the app protects calls, messages, photos, videos,
files, and voice messages by default. Users don't need to take any
action to enable it. Encryption applies to messages sent to individuals
and groups. The company says no one but the recipient(s) will be able
to read the messages. WhatsApp itself cannot see message contents. The
update covers all versions of WhatsApp, including the Android, iOS, and
Windows apps. WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, says more than one billion
people use the app to communicate. The change follows the widely
publicized FBI case against Apple, which ordered the company to unlock
an iPhone. Apple refused, but the FBI was able to unlock the device
using another method. WhatsApp says the government will not be able to
read WhatsApp messages
- Google's April Security Update for Android Now Live - Google
has highlighted its
April security patch, which is first being delivered to Nexus
smartphones and tablets. The patch resolves 29 issues, of which eight
are considered critical. The most severe could enable remote code
execution via certain media files, as well as the Stagefright bug.
Other issues impact the core kernel as well as certain Qualcomm
components. Google says it discovered the vulnerabilities earlier this
year and alerted its parters to the risks on March 16. Google has
already made the patch available in factory image form via the Google
Developer Site. It will release the associated new builds to the
Android Open Source Project within the next 48 hours, and will push the
update over the air to Nexus handsets in the next few days. Google
said, as far it is aware, none of the vulnerabilities were exploited.
Google provides monthly security updates to Nexus-branded Android
handsets.
- Facebook Fully Commits to Live Video with New Tools - Facebook
has significantly expanded
the capabilities of its Live Video feature by adding more ways to
connect and share with viewers. First, users can now broadcast live
video to small groups or schedule live video events in advance. Live
video also gains reactions, replayable comments, and filters. The
reactions work similar to those on Periscope, which means they pop up
in real time while the video is playing. Moving forward, comments made
during the live video will be re-published in order when the video is
played back later. The filters provide videographers with more options
to customize the appearance of their content. Facebook Live Videos
makes it simple to invite friends to watch live content with a tool
built directly into the viewer. Last, Facebook is making it easier to
discover live video. A new section highlighting live video will appear
in the mobile app to serve as a central spot for people to seek out
content. Moreover, Facebook is adding a live map on the desktop so
people can see where video is being shared. The service is expanding to
60 countries today. Facebook said these features will reach Android and
iOS devices via updates over the next few weeks
- BlackBerry Debuts Marshmallow Beta Program for Priv - BlackBerry
is opening the Android OS in Beta Zone program so consumers can
download and test Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Priv smartphone.
BlackBerry says space in the beta program is limited. Consumers who
bought their Priv directly from ShopBlackBerry, Amazon.com, or Carphone
Warehouse will be admitted into the beta program first. Those who
purchased the Priv through a wireless network operator will have to
wait. Registration will be open for the next two weeks. BlackBerry
expects to push the first beta to devices over-the-air during the
second week of April. The program will last between four and eight
weeks. BlackBerry said beta testers will be expected to enable
background diagnostic reporting so performance data can be analyzed by
BlackBerry's development team. BlackBerry hopes beta testers will also
provide direct feedback concerning speed, stability, and other factors.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow adds features such as Doze and Now On Tap.
- The TSA Spent $1.4 Million !!! - At least
$336,000 of the $1.4 million went to actual development costs, but
the rest of the amount's exact relevance to the project is still
unknown. Regardless of where that money went, this is shameful.
