TechNews - Bulldozer Chips Arriving Sept. 26 - tech

  • AMD's First Bulldozer Chips Arriving Sept. 26 -  Bulldozer-based Opterons will emerge on September 26. The Opteron 4200 series will feature processors with either six or eight Bulldozer cores-or going by the modular design of those chips, either three or four two-core modules. Interlagos, then, becomes the new powerhouse in AMD's server lineup. The upcoming Opteron 6200 series will have chips with 12 and 16 Bulldozer cores. Valencia is the next stage in AMD's Opteron 4000 series aimed at single-socket and dual-socket, cost-optimized, energy efficient servers. It will be succeeded in 2012 by a CPU codenamed Sepang that has up to ten Bulldozer cores.
  • Zotac Introduces GeForce GTX 580 Infinity Edition - The Zotac GeForce GTX 580 Infiinity Edition uses a watercooling kit from CooIT which allows up to 25% decrease in temperature. The Infinity Edition GTX 580 has an overclocked core frequency of 815MHz and memory frequency of 4100MHz. Other features include 512 stream processors, 1.5GB memory size, 384-bit memory interface, 1 x mini HDMI output and 2 x DVI outputs.
  • Windows 8 Excludes Dolby Technologies - Dolby Labs reports that Microsoft has decided not to include Dolby technology in the upcoming release of Windows 8. This is a surprising move on Microsoft's part considering Dolby is included in Windows 7. Dolby shares fell 18% on Friday on the news. The absence of Dolby technologies in current Windows 8 builds does not inherently imply that the OS will not support DVD playback or digital surround sound. It is possible that Microsoft will choose to license these technologies from another provider
  • Microsoft Offers $250,000 For Security Defense Research - Microsoft just announced that is giving away a total of $250,000 in BlueHat prize rewards for "innovative" computer security research. Winners will be announced at next year's Black Hat security conference, with the grand prize being $200,000 and second prize being $50,000, Katie Moussouris, head of Microsoft's Security Community Outreach and Strategy team, said in a conference call from the conference being held here.
  • Happy Birthday: World Wide Web turns 20 - Berners-Lee, now Director of the World Wide Web Consortium, used concepts from earlier hypertext systems to write a proposal in March 1989 for what would eventually become the World Wide Web. In November 1990, Berners-Lee and Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau proposed to use hypertext to link and access information of various kinds. The project was publicly introduced in December 1990 at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. Berners-Lee used a NeXT Computer as the world's first web server and also to write the first web browser, WorldWideWeb. By Christmas 1990, Berners-Lee had built all the tools necessary for a working Web: the first Web browser (which was a web editor as well), the first web server, and the first web pages, which of course described the project itself.
  • Defcon Lockpickers Open Card-And-Code Government Locks In Seconds - To open a door fitted with the latest U.S. government-certified lock from high-end Swiss lock manufacturer Kaba, an employee must both enter a code up to eight digits long, then swipe a unique identity card coded to comply with a new standard that requires an extra layer of security, one designed to track individual staffers and make covert intrusion harder than ever. Or, as lockpicking expert Marc Weber Tobias demonstrated, you can stick a wire in the tiny display light above the keypad and instantly render all of that 'security' irrelevant.
  • Minecraft creator sued by Bethesda Softworks - In a case of "scrappy but popular indie developer" vs "big game publisher" Minecraft's creator Markus "Notch" Persson has announced on his official blog site that his company Mojang is now facing a lawsuit filed by Bethesda Softworks. The issue is the title for Mojang's next game Scrolls which was announced earlier this year. Persson is not directly involved in the development of this game which is a fantasy tactical strategy title which also uses collectible cards.
  • Xbox 360 is More Powerful Than Space Shuttle Computer - The flight computer aboard the space shuttle has less than one percent of the power of an Xbox 360 game console. Astronauts load programs directing the phases of a mission - liftoff, orbit, landing - into the computer one at a time after removing the program for the previous segment. Why hasn't NASA upgraded the computer? The agency values its 30-year history of reliability. That said, astronauts don't go into space with only one computer. Crew laptops and other laptops also make the trip.

It is no surprise that MS totally lacks security expertise and creativity.
The surprising part here is the shamefully low amount (the award) compared to the research required that is meant to protect their products that yields billions.
If I was a security expert, I would either steer clear of MS or patent the idea myself and then sell it to them instead of turning it in for a miserable 250k.

Yep. Eventually everyone has to face the music.
But, you just move sales to a country where such laws/patents do not apply, and you continue with your business as usual.
Yes, that means only sales. That's the only thing that they can limit.
If people like it, they will gladly tick the "Yes, I am more than 18' and 'Yes, I am from ...' checkbox when they buy it, thus circumventing the flawed legislation system.

Yes, but I guess everyone knew (or guessed) that since it's natural. Space shuttle hardware is reliable and conserves just a few watts (that is power in case you don't know) - unlike CrapBox.
