TechNews-AMD Phenom II X2 550 and Athlon II X2 250 - tech
(hx) 04:08 AM CEST - Jun,04 2009 - Post a comment
  • AMD Phenom II X2 550 and Athlon II X2 250 Processors Tested -  The $102 Phenom II X2 550 offers a lot of value for the money. It again is faster than the competition at its price point, and it performs well against the E8400 and E8500 parts which are almost double its price.  hen combined with a motherboard like the Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P it becomes a fun and exciting part to work and play with. It can overclock easily, and the performance it brings is quite competitive with what else is on the market.Brisbane had a good run, but it is finally time for the old girl to retire.  In its place are the shiny, new Athlon II and Phenom II parts, and they certainly will not disappoint with what they have to deliver.  These make excellent gaming processors, and they have enough power to handle applications like transcoding/encoding/ripping, which are becoming everyday activities for hundreds of thousands of users.
  • Intel Core i7 975 3.33GHz Processor Tested - Today Intel is finally releasing new Core i7 models and speed bins to the market, as well as announcing a new flagship chip, the Core i7-975 Extreme Edition. Though it will definitely command a hefty price tag, at a stock clock speed of 3.33GHz and Intel Turbo Boost speeds at 3.45GHz (all cores) and 3.6GHz (single core), you can bet this new Core i7 is one hot-rod of a quad-core CPU.
  • Intel Demos Quad-Core Clarksfield Laptop - The machine was an Asus engineering sample, featuring an undisclosed Nvidia mobile GPU and we had chance to have a quick play around with Crysis at 1,920 x 1,080, which all looked pretty impressive.
  • Windows 7 To Be Generally Available Oct 22 - Microsoft that Windows 7 will ship October 22, 2009. No word on pricing yet though.
  • Microsoft discusses Windows 7 starter - Here's a list of features that Starter won't include.
  • Windows 7 Gmail notifier application - Neowin member daty2k1 has released a Windows 7 Gmail application. The notifier is similar to the current official Google notifier application that sits in the system tray and notifies users of new messages in their Gmail inbox. It allows you to see a preview of all unread mails you have. This version of the notifier is tuned for Windows 7 only and runs as a task bar application. It is using Gmail secured RSS feed to retrieve the mails so it should be pretty safe. Credentials are saved using a machine's dependent encryption.
  • Windows Vista SP2: Readers Report Big Increases in Free Disk Space - Some users are getting back big chunks of disk space after installing Vista SP2.
  • Bing.com now live and publicly available - Bing.com (Microsoft's Live Search overhaul) is now available for everybody to use, as a public beta, with no sign-ups for invitations needed.
  • Fox News: Bing is free porn portal - Fox News has come forward with criticisms of Microsoft's recently unveiled search engine Bing, claiming that it provides "a cornucopia of pornography" and that it is easy to transform "the search engine into [your] very own pornographic Web site."
  • Microsoft offering free (though limited) TechNet Plus subscription - Looks like this is part of a pilot program that is set to expire on September 30, 2009, which means it's more of a three month deal, but hey, free is free! Currently, the expiration date reads "1/1/1900" but Microsoft is working on fixing that.
  • YouTube For TV - YouTube has publicly launched a new page essentially designed to be compatible with video game consoles. The new page is called YouTube XL. What do you think? Do you like it? It sure looks nicer on your big LCD TV, even if it is missing features.
  • First Trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon - Summit has debuted the first trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the sequel to the insanely popular Twilight from just last year. This is based on the second book in Stephenie Meyer's incredibly popular series of novels about vampire Edward Cullen and his love Bella Swan
  • Storm Warriors Trailer -  The Storm Warriors is directed by Hong Kong brothers Oxide and Danny Pang, of the original The Eye, The Tesseract, Re-cycle, The Messengers, and Bangkok Dangerous previously. The Storm Warriors is only scheduled to hit theaters in China starting in December of 2009. This film doesn't have a US distributor yet.
  • New G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra TV Spot - Real American Heroes - A brand new TV spot for G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra that aired during the MTV Movie Awards has made its way online. Paramount will premiere G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra in theaters everywhere on August 7th this year.
  • Project Natal video hands-on, impressions, and further details - For those of you who missed it, Project Natal is motion tracking solution
  • Total Recall Remake - Yes you read that headline correctly. They are producing a Total Recall remake. A move that quite frankly confuses me a little bit.
  • Happy Sheep (pic) - check it out
  • First Insane Teaser Trailer for [Rec] 2! - Here's the first teaser trailer for [Rec] 2 and it's insane, you'll see what I mean momentarily. Don't watch this at home in the dark and don't watch this with kids around, you'll traumatize them for life. That's my only warning :P
  • Man aims airbag at family jewels, regrets what happens next (video) - Ever wonder what it's like to get nailed in the privates with a skateboard propelled by an exploding airbag? Wonder no more as this idiot has done it on video. Point and laugh, and hopefully learn :P
  • Megan Fox Bikini Hotness from GQ - Here's Megan Fox's crazy sexy photoshoot from the July issue of British GQ. Enjoy!
