  • Want Windows 10 to stop tracking you? Now there's an app for that - There's a lightweight, open-source app that aims to claw back your privacy. Among the options, the app -- tentatively called "Disable Windows 10 Tracking" -- disables telemetry collection, disables certain Windows services, and other tracking. The code is also available on GitHub for inspection. According to Qazi, the app started out as a Python script before being developed into its current standalone form after gaining support and traction on Reddit. Qazi's plan is to build out the app to add as many features as possible in the hope it can disable most if not all of the operating system's tracking.
  • Microsoft expands its bug bounty program, increases payouts - Microsoft has been paying bounties to researchers who find and disclose security issues for a while. Now, it's expanded the program. At Black Hat, the company announced that it will double the size of payments it makes in its Bounty for Defense program, and it'll also be expanding the Online Services:
  • There's a Firefox Exploit in the Wild - You Should Update Right Now - Mozilla has published a blog post explaining that a Firefox exploit is running in the wild that can search for and upload files from your computer. Firefox has already released security updates to fix it. That means you should update to Firefox 39.0.3 right now.
  • Samsung to Issue Security Fixes Monthly - Samsung today said it is introducing a new policy to distribute security patches to its mobile devices once per month. The company said the change will help protect its device owners. "With the recent security issues, we have been rethinking the approach to getting security updates to our devices in a more timely manner," explained Samsung. "Since software is constantly exploited in new ways, developing a fast response process to deliver security patches to our devices is critical to keep them protected." Samsung said it will work with its carrier partners to make sure the patches are distributed as soon as possible. Samsung recently fast-tracked a security update for its newest Galaxy smartphones to repair the Android Stagefright vulnerability. The patch is being distributed to some Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones.
  • How to Install Android Apps on Windows 10 Mobile - The tools have been given to a private group of top developers who already have popular apps on Android, Microsoft is hoping they'll port their apps over to Windows 10 Mobile, but since the tools have now leaked, anyone can port anything over with just a few clicks.
  • VLC updated for Windows 10 with bug fixes and new features - VLC has updated their popular media player app for Windows 10, bringing a new UI, bug fixes and new features. Perhaps one of the most notable differences between the new app and the old one is the newly updated UI. The UI has been enhanced, along with animations to match the visual aesthetic of Windows 10. There are also under-the-hood improvements that should make the app run faster, especially on low-end devices.
  • 4K Blu-ray discs arriving in 2015 - Blu-ray Disc Association has announced that it will begin licensing the UHD 4K video format on August 24, with expected "product announcements from various companies" coming this holiday season. Though many Blu-ray disc players today bear 4K upscaling functionality, the result is but a faux impersonation of authentic 4K video, often producing jagged and significantly blurrier visuals. In addition to bolstering a sharp 3840x2160 resolution, Ultra HD Blu-ray brings a greater range of color and frame rates of up to 60 frames per second for the Peter Jackson fans out there. Granted you have both a TV and content that supports it, high dynamic range video will also be present. As expected, Ultra HD Blu-ray players will bring backwards compatibility with standard 1080p Blu-ray discs as well.
  • Microsoft Open-Sources iOS App Porting Tool - Microsoft has said its Windows Bridge for iOS application is moving to open source. Windows Bridge is the tool developers need to port iOS apps to the Windows platform. It can be used to create Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 desktops apps for now, but will support the mobile versions of these two operating systems later this year. Microsoft said it wants to rely on the open source community to put Windows Bridge through its paces and contribute code and/or bug fixes as needed. Windows Bridge for iOS is being released as a technical preview and will see a full release in the fall. Microsoft is expected to offer Windows Bridge for Android in the fall as a beta app. Microsoft hopes developers will bring their Android and iOS apps to the Windows Platform, which may help address the app gap.
  • Microsoft Unleashes a Flurry Of Apps for Android Wear, Apple Watch - Microsoft has made available a handful of apps for wearables running Google's Android Wear and Apple's WatchOS. First, Microsoft has ported Outlook to the Apple Watch. The app lets Apple Watch owners browse and read emails and perform actions such as archiving, deleting, and flagging messages. It includes pre-written responses and supports dictation for longer messages. It accompanies the Outlook email app for iOS. Second, Microsoft made its Translator app available to both the Apple Watch and Android Wear. The app lets wearable owners get instant translations in 50 languages by speaking to their watch. It supports search history and caches recently-used phrases. Third, Microsoft updated its OneDrive and OneNote apps for Android Wear. OneDrive will now display a photo on the watch face alongside notifications for up-to-date files. OneNote makes it easy to dictate new notes by saying "OK Google, take a note." The app also displays the most recently viewed notes on the watch face. Outlook, Translator, OneDrive, and OneNote are all free to download from iTunes and the Google Play Store.
  • T-Mobile First to Drop Samsung Galaxy S6 Prices - T-Mobile has lowered the price points of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge a week after Samsung said it would drop the phones' prices. The Galaxy S6 now costs $580, $660, and $660 for the 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB models, respectively. Those reflect price drops of $100 to $200. The Galaxy S6 Edge has similar price cuts, and now costs $680, $760, and $760 for the 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB models, respectively. Samsung reported its second quarter earnings recently and indicated the S6 and S6 Edge were not selling as well as hoped. In response, Samsung said it "plans to firmly maintain its sale of premium smartphones by flexibly adjusting the price of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge." T-Mobile's competitors, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless, have yet to follow the Uncarrier's lead, but they likely will in the near future.
  • BlackBerry Reveals Passport Silver Edition - BlackBerry today showed off the Passport Silver Edition, a refined version of its wide-screen smartphone. The Silver Edition has a reinforced stainless steel frame to improve strength and help with antenna performance. The design was updated with rounded corners, a slimmer profile, and a diamond pattern soft-touch back plate to improve its appeal and usability. Most other features of the phone remain unchanged. The phone has a 1440 by 1440 pixel 4.5-inch screen, 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 13-megapixel camera, and a massive 3,450mAh battery. The device runs BlackBerry OS 10.3.2. BlackBerry is selling the Passport Silver Edition in North America beginning today via its web site. The phone costs $549.

Google said a handful of other apps have been updated with Chromecast support, including games FitFlap and Catch Phrase Blitz, as well as Pixlr, Food Network, Travel Channel, and Pokemon TV. All these apps are available from the Google Play Store.

  • MIT Develops Robot With Human Reflexes - Researchers at MIT are giving robots hands on training on how to KILL US ALL!!!
  • Too Lazy To Walk? The WalkCar Is For You - This portable Segway seems like a real engineering marvel; it weighs under 6 pounds and can reach top speeds of 6 miles per hour, for distances of up to 7 miles, after three hours of charging. I feel kind of conflicted, though, because this kind of thing is also the epitome of laziness.

  • Tom Cruise Runs For His Money  - Does 9 minutes seem like a lot of on-screen running time? Maybe not, but think about other action films you've seen. It's shooting, driving, yelling, staring intently at things, but never running. And keep in mind, this doesn't take into account all the times they had to reshoot these sequences.
  • Steve Jobs - In Theaters October 9 (TV Spot 2) - The minute-long clip gives viewers a look at some of the struggles Jobs faced during his earlier years such as his rocky relationship with the mother of his estranged daughter Lisa. VICE Japan went to investigate and visit a monastery running a rehab program that involves daily group vomiting sessions.
  • A Visualization Of Every Nuclear Detonation From 1945 To Present - It's been 70 years since the detonation of an atomic bomb at Hiroshima. @ VLC - Interesting as it worked for me no problems.

@ Want Windows 10 to stop tracking you? ... - And for those who know what they are doing, you don't need it. Just look at your program options and explore your new OS settings. Thankfully for others, there's a program out there so you don't need to use your brain. This is it.

@Steve Jobs - Seriously.. who the fuck watches this BS?

@A Visualization Of Every Nuclear Detonation - That's pretty scary.

@The best pics on the Internet - I don't think half of those are 'the best'

And aside... if you want to/ or thinking of going to Win10.. nothing says it better than this.. http://tech.slashdot.org/story/15/08/09/1825242/windows-10-from-a-linux-users-perspective

It's nothing special compared to Win10. It's a UI change, I think the UI and the OS is a little snappier but it's no huge change. As a matter of fact if you don't like MS tablet UI crap I (I don't) you want to steer away. I run Win10 on my gaming rig, more from a curiosity side of things to see how games play. I run Linux and Android on everything else. So far Win10 is not so bad, but not perfect. Some games have some issues. Not just old games, but new ones. Some devs were fast to put out updates and you know the story others will take their sweet ass time. Best part I guess is apparently you can roll back to your old OS. Not sure I will, I don't mind the UI change. Adds a little spice to life. I've grown tired of Win7 myself and wanted a change. Upgrading was painless other than removing a trojan that was resting in my CBS logs that no anti-spyware or AV picked up. Cleaned it manually. As for the MS spying on you, this is just some whiners like Koogle. If you know what you are doing, MS has put a lot of things in their OS and apps that sends diagnostic information back to MS to help fix bugs faster. If you are like me, you can go around and disable all this crap. It's not hard and there is that lazy-ass app for those who don't feel like using the marshmellow on their shoulders. Any app you get these days, be-it android or windows will send diagnostic info. Sadly like MS it's on by default and requires you look through your program options. Firefox does, Chrome does, Office does, media players do, games do... Anyway. People said there are drivers that install auto-magically again from MS, again this is just another option that existed in Win7 that is easily disabled. There is no rush to run to Win10 unless you want a UI change like I did. Beyond that, wait, enjoy Win7.
