  • Gamers get into 'The Zone' - "Flow State is an optimal psychological experience. It's when you're functioning on auto-pilot, when everything clicks into place and goes right," said Dr Costas Karageorghis, lecturer in sports psychology at Brunel University. It's a deeply pleasurable experience and it's something that's not very often experienced by people, rather it's something that often represents people's peak experiences in a particular area." Recent research has suggested that it could be possible for a person immersed in a computer game to achieve the same level of meditative concentration.
  • Tiny flying robots: Future masters of espionage - Biologists and technologists at the University of California, Berkeley have spent the past four years developing a tiny robot, called the Micromechanical Flying Insect, that they say will one day fly like a fly. The Berkeley project is among a handful aiming to engineer devices that can soar, dart and hover on gossamer wings that flap with a rhythm and precision otherwise found only in nature.
  • Linux poised to plug in USB 2 - Support for a faster version of USB in Linux is imminent, and will become a permanent part of the Linux landscape when the next version of the operating system rolls around. The upcoming 2.4.19 version of the Linux kernel-the core part of the Unix-like operating system-for the first time will include support for many USB(Universal Serial Bus) 2.0 features and devices. USB lets people easily plug devices such as digital cameras, mice or printers into a computer.
  • Voice Activated Wearable Computer - JPL engineer Ann Devereaux is hard at work developing the Wearable Augmented Reality Prototype (Warp), a personal communication device. The voice- activated wearable computer allows easy, real-time access to voice communication, pictures, video, people and technical reports.
  • Robonaut - Robonaut is a humanoid robot designed by the Robot Systems Technology Branch at NASA's Johnson Space Center in a collaborative effort with DARPA. The Robonaut project seeks to develop and demonstrate a robotic system that can function as an EVA astronaut equivalent. Robonaut jumps generations ahead by eliminating the robotic scars (e.g., special robotic grapples and targets) and specialized robotic tools of traditional on-orbit robotics. However, it still keeps the human operator in the control loop through its telepresence control system. Robonaut is designed to be used for "EVA" tasks, i.e., those which were not specifically designed for robots.
  • Palestinian first person shooter - Under Ash is a first person shooting game that puts you in the battle in the middle east... as a Palestinian. The game makers say there are no civilian targets in this game that the player can only fight the Isreali Defense Forces (thanks GeekNews).

  • ATI speaks on Windows 98 and NT4 drivers for RADEON 9700/9000 - We have read on several web-sites, that ATI Technologies does not provide the drivers for Windows 98 and Windows NT4 operational systems for its recently announced RADEON 9000 and RADEON 9700 graphics processors.
ATI has clarified these statements and it seems that the problem is not in ATI but in the developer of the operational systems. Apparently, beginning the first of July 2002, WHQL will no longer accept submissions for all hardware devices and systems for Win98 SE, WinNT 4.0. Although Microsoft no longer certifies devices under the mentioned operating systems, ATI still supports them.Users of Win98 just simply need to use the WHQL certified WinME driver provided both on our shipping CD's and on our web-site. ATI also has an NT4 driver available for the RADEON 9000 and RADEON 9000 Pro which will be made available shortly.

ATI has been blaming everything but themselves on drivers' problems since the 90s, the early benchmark of 9700 seems nice, but I doubt the driver is going to keep up to that...

All I can add to this, is that I'm a proud owner of an ATI 8500 card, No buggy nVidia crap allowed here :-)
