Sony settles out of court with PS3 jailbreaker - briefly
(hx) 01:24 AM CEST - Apr,12 2011 - Post a comment / read (13)
The bitter war Sony has waged against PS3 hacker George 'Geohot' Hotz has finally come to a close. Sony today announced that it and Hotz have settled the deal out of court, with Hotz promising he won't jailbreak the PS3 again. The deal included other terms of course, but those were not disclosed.
Sony Computer Entertainment America ('SCEA') and George Hotz ('Hotz') today announced the settlement of the lawsuit filed by SCEA against Hotz in federal court in San Francisco, California. The parties reached an agreement in principle on March 31, 2011. As part of the settlement, Hotz consented to a permanent injunction.

Both parties expressed satisfaction that litigation had been quickly resolved. "Sony is glad to put this litigation behind us," said Riley Russell, General Counsel for SCEA. "Our motivation for bringing this litigation was to protect our intellectual property and our consumers. We believe this settlement and the permanent injunction achieve this goal."

"It was never my intention to cause any users trouble or to make piracy easier," said Hotz, "I’m happy to have the litigation behind me." Hotz was not involved in the recent attacks on Sony’s internet services and websites.

In the action, SCEA accused Hotz of violating federal law by posting online information about the security system in the PlayStation 3 videogame console and software that SCEA claimed could be used to circumvent the security system in the console and allow the playing of pirated videogames. Hotz denies any wrongdoing on his part. Hotz’s motion to dismiss for lack of personal jurisdiction was still pending before the federal court in San Francisco but a preliminary injunction was issued requiring Hotz to take down the postings challenged by SCEA.

“We want our consumers to be able to enjoy our devices and products in a safe and fun environment and we want to protect the hard work of the talented engineers, artists, musicians and game designers who make PlayStation games and support the PlayStation Network,” added Russell. “We appreciate Mr. Hotz’s willingness to address the legal issues involved in this case and work with us to quickly bring this matter to an early resolution.”

What a joke. With everything Sony ripped from the PS3, could anyone even have the sense to solicit another to get one. This big court case concluded accepting the word from a pirate. Ya he wont jailbreak it but it's not like Sony will have cops around him watching him. He could easily tell others how to do it. This whole thing and even more is so fucking stupid.

There are undisclosed details about the case, so you can't assume anything, Tom. Hotz's lawyer probably told him to agree to Sony's offer, either because of the apparent threat of jail time or some monetary/future career offer. Unless all those internet psycho posts were just for show and he's actually a pussy...

"This big court case concluded accepting the word from a pirate."

yeah whats up with that.. lets get every 'pirate' through the clowning circus act that is the racketeering corruption scumCourts. Those that run and work for that system aren't at all the real fucking pirates that masquerad around on their flawed criminal and corrupt moral highground!

"Ya he wont jailbreak it but it's not like Sony will have cops around him watching him. He could easily tell others how to do it."

The world people (cretins) have created is fucking stupid.. common sense or any other good virtue doesn't exist, and the police are fucking dumb drones used by corporate/government fascists to enforce their self serving benefiting policies.

"This whole thing and even more is so fucking stupid."

yes I can agree there, Sony obviously felt getting this fast tracked would be better for them! personally though I feel for Geohotz going through this retardation, but this entire sickening process would have been better dragged on. Sony would continue to get more flak along with retarded corporate shills supporting these disgusting actions.

Even though I have and still stand behind Sony in this case, it's pretty clear they would like to get this over as quickly as possible, and they even don't charge him for "economic losses", because they otherwise have an enemy without a face (Anon), It's a great sign that mass people action CAN have some effect on multinational's unethic behaviors. Not that it will change that much though, but even if it's a little....

"Even though I have and still stand behind Sony in this case"

You stand alongside corporate fascism.

Ozieo(10:09 PM CEST - Apr,13 2011 )
Yep, I fully stand behind it. I don't want lowlife cheaters or hackers messing with my account when doing multiplayer games, if Sony would want to put any cheater/hacker behind bars, I'll still stand behind them.
I didn't buy a gaming console to run Linux on it, I bought it to play games and watch movies, and so far I still can. I run Linux myself on a PC. That's such a box with the latest hardware and up-to-date components, and even a keyboard, a system which is much more powerful these days to do these kind of things.

It pathetically apathetic degenerate retards like you Ozieo that are of problems in this world. Your viewpoints on what constitutes prison as punishment aren't balanced they are fucking stupid you moron.

Baconnaise(04:15 PM CEST - Apr,14 2011 )
The problem I have with companies such as sony is they fund political motivations and parties that support a free market with less government controls but want their cake so to speak too with being able to protect their IP at the same time. You cannot have it both ways if you want to protect your IP in this country (USA) then you must pay taxes as a company to this country as well as follow all regulations future and present.

The story itself I can't say that I'm familiar with it since I don't own a ps3 and the friends I have that do don't talk about otheros or anything. It would be interesting to see some of the real motivations for putting so much weight on this person as well as his real intentions on his.

 It's morons like you who don't understand, you retard.
If you buy a closed source gaming console, and you start dumping all kinds of crap on it, and then EXPECT to keep on flooding the company's servers with it, and irritate more honest people, then YOU have a problem.

Nobody forced you to buy a fucking gaming console to "enjoy" Linux in the first place.
If you want to keep playing your pirated/stolen stuff, good for you, you still can, be it with a PS3 or an XBlock, but don't go screaming that you want it all for free.

BTW, for anyone not happy with the removal of that option, only 10 out of the 100.000 are the clever nerds, the rest are just cheap rats waiting to get everything for free, and your vocabulary makes it 110% clear that you are just one of them.

Why the fuck are you talking about something completely different, what kind of fucking dumbass moronic drone are you that thinks a corporation can dictate how you use a piece of hardware you bought! Wake up dicky doh, they changed the fucking legal bullshit then pulled a fast one of changing firmware. Those who reverse engineering that bullshit have every fucking right to that as far as I'm concerned, gullible sycophant shit heads like you don't stand for any principle. And FYI I don't buy fucking closed consumer console shite with its closed fleeced market that is soley controlled by said corporation.

"Nobody forced you to buy a fucking gaming console to "enjoy" Linux in the first place. "

You moronic dumb fuck, they marketed and sold the fucking device with that option in the first place.. so just because mass of conned sumer pillocks don't bother with it doesn't mean those who could have done something useful with it won't be pissed off. Sony just didn't want people buying the console hardware soley for other computation purposes.

Fucking drones like you whining retards who can't play a game without thinking the game is being hacked or trying to take moral highground pirating are fucking pathetic. Far bigger issues than measly piracy that can be highlighted as to why games sales slump. Its just a greedy short sighted marketing ceo shill tactic to deflect attention away from the real reasons why games don't sell, when we all know they fucking do, the only ones who are ever hurt are the smaller developers and quite frankly they make more losses because of the unbalanced playing field and the cost requirements.

Ozieo(04:31 PM CEST - Apr,17 2011 )
If you can find me ANY evidence of Sony writing anything about it on the console's package boxing, or even in the user manual, please post me a screenshot.
If not, shut the fuck up and get your whining with your friends in the HomebreW channels, I don't give a fuck about drones who do not understand a gaming console's objectives.

Your room temperature fail logic must have been reaching its high point with that stench of rationalized bullshit, you must really think that makes it excusable for how Sony want to fascistically dictate how people who have bought the device want to use it?

Sony(like MS and other corporate gubberment and injustice scum wanting to conduct their business without consequence and maximum profit control and racketeering using such manipulation, bribery, lies and twisted flawed moralistic bullshit) In the Sony case its railroading people into accepting its legal crap with crippled firmware. And you think its ok all because they didn't write on the manual or box. Yeah maybe they should make it clear how they run and can use and abuse their scammy online services to manipulate how people use the console.. yeah good one, such upfront honesty wouldn't get as many fools, while lies and lots of bullshit does. And it only works because most people in sheeple society are ignorant and complacent about the blatant shit they are forced and coerced into complying with and indirectly funding. Allowing corporate shits like Sony et al, to buy and lobby for their version of corrupt laws and justice and get away with it. While useful idiots like you defend it like you have something to benefit from such a stinking and corrupt hypocrite system.

oh the objective is even more laughable considering you said drones, sums you up Ozieo.

Ozieo(04:24 AM CEST - Apr,20 2011 )
I "benefit" because I enjoy playing games on it. If you cannot do that, which is obvious with your paranoid, anti-social view on life, that's too bad for you, but I won't waste my sleep on your brabbling.
