SkillGround launches - Play for Cash - briefly
(hx) 12:19 AM CET - Dec,01 2006 - Post a comment / read (2)
Tomorrow, Groove Games will be officially launching SkillGround (thanks ShackNews), an online multiplayer gaming arena in which gamers can compete for real-world cash in skill-matched games. The service, which appears to be fully operational despite its December 1 launch, currently supports four games: shooters WarPath and Close Quarters Conflict, fighter Kung Fu: Deadly Arts, and L.A. Street Racing. Accounts come in two flavors, free and cash (both require Internet Explorer along with a Broadband Internet connection).

While you can download and play all four games for free the folks behind the service would like for you to put in a deposit so you can join up against other people to win matches and therefore more money. Cash accounts have no explicit subscription fee, but require a monetary deposit from PayPal/Credit Card/Check. Money from that cash pool is put at stake when going up against other players, and it allows you to in turn also win money, with prizes scaling proportionally to the players' skill rankings. From the FAQ:
Q: Is SkillGround considered gambling?
A: No. Since the SkillGround games are based on skill and not chance, winners are determined by their level of skill and performance in a particular game. All the games offered on SkillGround are skill games. No RNG (random number generator) is involved to define the outcome of any SkillGround game. SkillGround operates within the legal gaming framework in the jurisdictions offered. Although some jurisdictions also prohibit skill games such as those offered by SkillGround, Cash Accounts are not available in those jurisdictions and the full SkillGround service is only available where permitted by law.
Hmm Interesting I guess, but I really have to wonder how they're going to deal with the inevitable cheating.

You know what would be interesting, if a system like this got to the point where it required you to point a webcam at your monitor in order to play... that way there would be no way you could cheat.

I guess there might be performance impacts do to disk access, but with all the dualcore cpus and raid disk arrays, it might not be that bad.

They could even have a water mark system where if your webcam was turned away from the monitor you would disconnect.

The feed could just be sent to your harddrive, as a failsafe to prove you weren't cheating. If noone suspects you, the feed could be deleted.

Is that an insane idea? right now? probably... a few years down the line, maybe not. Depends how bad cheating gets in systems like this.

I for one would love the opportunity to put 5 bucks down that I can beat some punks in a fragfest. and reap a very small fortune if I can.

A few years back this is why we used to do all the time at my friend's house when he held lans. He would do a few games based around betting. It was fun. :-D
