- Microsoft chief puts on gloves to defend Xbox - Microsoft would be
forced to
reconsider selling the Xbox video game system in Australia, or seek
changes to the law, following the acquittal in July of a Sydney man alleged to
have sold chips that modify a Sony PlayStation 2 to play imported games,
Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said yesterday. After the launch
of a Telstra mobile computing device, Mr Ballmer said the decision affected
Xbox's business model, which relies on subsidising the hardware console in
return for a royalty on every game sold.
WiFi software tracks you down - Ekahau has released an updated version of
its software, which
allows
devices to be physically tracked when they are connected to an 802.11 WLAN
network.
- Hundreds of Navy PCs missing - The U.S. Pacific Fleet's
warships and submarines were
missing nearly 600 computers as of late July, including at least 14 known
to have handled classified data.
- Don't Bother with AGP 8X? - Based on our initial testing, AGP
8X on today's architectures and with current applications doesn't appear to
deliver any appreciable performance improvement for nVidia boards. The Radeon
9700's potential benefit from AGP 8X is still something of a question mark.
This story may change down the road,
it will take some time for game developers to architect game engines that use
AGP 8X to produce significant performance improvements.

- Award 4.51PG BIOS Can Support Big HDDs - The 32GB bug in
Award BIOS that prevents many users from using HDD larger than 32GB (BIOS
hangs at detection) can be easily fixed in existing BIOSes. This means that if
there's no BIOS for your board that supports HDDs over 32GB but supports up to
32GB, it can be fixed. The 64GB bug that causes hang at configuration table
