1UP reports that Sony's PlayStation 3 is closing the gap on Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the quest for Global Domination.
Official figures from Sony have revealed that overall PlayStation 3 hardware sales surpassed those of the Xbox 360 during Q2 2010. Not only that, but the current unofficial tally from VGChartz indicates that the PlayStation 3 could be on track overtake Microsoft's console in worldwide install base.

According to the company's latest earnings report (via Business Insider), Sony moved 3.2 million PlayStation 3 systems between June and September. During that same period, Microsoft managed to sell 2.8 million units -- roughly 400,000 less than the PlayStation 3.

Moreover, VGChartz lists the total number of PlayStation 3 consoles purchased worldwide at about 4 million less than the Xbox 360's current install base. That's 40.2 million globally for Sony's system and 44.15 for Microsoft's.
Well, install base is nice, but what really matters is how people are using the console. That is where Sony and Microsoft make their money -- getting the system in the house, then selling games, extras, etc... and this is where Microsoft so far has done better with Xbox Live.

well ofc, now that the games can be copied/pirated it's getting more popular, just as I predicted many times. Now, who's to say that piracy is bad for a company? :)

Piracy is bad for game companies idiot.. People who are stealing the software are thus not paying for it.. you following me so far? If there not buying it then the company isn't making money.. haven't lost you have I?
The less money a company makes the less capital it has to work with to produce future games.. still with me? This is a downward spiral. even monsters like Sony and Microsoft can be hurt by idiot pirates and hackers.

If your stupid enough to support piracy then you have nothing to bitch about when the gaming industry becomes to unprofitable, and shuts down. End of story.

If half you idiots would use your brain, you'd realize how stupid it is to support piracy of any sort.

exactly.. Just go ask 'Notch', developer of Minecraft, his biggest thieving pirate is Paypal (majority of his pirates eventually buy the game or had no intention of ever buying it and so the game was just used a restricted demo of sorts, the developer benefits in the ways not so easily calculated)....
