  • Microsoft slashes Japanese Xbox operation - The Japanese arm of Microsoft's Xbox division is to see personnel reductions across the board, as the console continues to struggle in the Far East - but the company denies any scaling back of the Xbox operation itself in the territory. The headcount of the 200-person strong division will be cut by 34, with reductions affecting personnel in both marketing and production. The company claims that these changes are being made to improve the profitability of the business. It's not clear whether the departments affected are purely related to the sales, distribution and promotion of Xbox in Japan, or whether development personnel will also be hit.
  • Office 2003 may pose antivirus problem - The latest test version of Microsoft Office 2003 could cause problems for antivirus companies because the XML-based format it supports will bog down scanning software, according to security experts.  The problem centers on macros embedded in documents in the Office 2003 beta, or test, version. When saved as an XML (Extensible Markup Language) file, the macros can more or less wind up anywhere. This means that scanners must search the entire contents of a file, rather than examine the part of the file where macros are always positioned.
  • Microsoft Warns of Firewall Flaw - Microsoft is warning customers of another security vulnerability, this one affecting its Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 firewall and Web cache product. A software flaw was found in the ISA Server's Domain Name Service intrusion detection application filter that could allow an attacker to launch a denial of service attack against the ISA Server that prevents that device from processing DNS requests.
  • Microsoft Asks Colleges to Teach Hacking - Microsoft is working with a number of universities in several countries to set up courses that teach students how to write secure code, the company said Friday. The University of Leeds in England is the first to announce such a course. As part of an 11 week module that will start in January next year, third-year undergraduates at the University of Leeds will be asked to hack into software and fix any security bugs they find, Nick Efford, senior teaching fellow at the School of Computing, University of Leeds, said.

  • Sweet Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro Card - Hercules has provided a first product shot of their upcoming Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card. The card features a brighter blue PCB than what we are used to from the earlier 9700 Pro and again sports the well received copper cooling solution and memory heatsinks. The card comes at standard clock frequencies: 380Mhz core / 340 memory on a 256bit bus with an initial 128Mbyte setup.
  • Windows XP Embedded with SP1 - Microsoft has released an update for Windows XP Embedded with SP. This update (Q816654) addresses a potential problem when using EWF on certain Windows XP Embedded with SP1 runtimes. In some cases, a blue screen error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL can occur during EWF usage.
  • History of Windows - Neowin has an article that shows the progression of Microsoft Windows from pre-windows 1.0 through the 2003 server.
  • List of Win2k post SP3 fixes updated - The list of hotfixes released after windows 2000 service pack 3 came out has been updated.
  • Programs Run Slower After You Install Windows XP SP-1 - This problem may occur if the programs you run frequently allocate and deallocate large blocks of memory. Changes in Windows XP SP1 in the memory management system have caused this operation to take significantly longer than with pre-SP1 Windows XP. This fix (isn't publicly available) may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.
