- Mr. Nukem goes to Washington - In February, Rep. Joe Baca (D.
Calif.)
is expected to resurrect "The Protect Children from Video Game Sex and
Violence Act". (The original version died last year in the subcommittee on
crime, terrorism and homeland security.) When it's reintroduced, the bill will
have the same goal: making it a federal crime to sell or rent violent video
games to anyone under 18. The language, though, is being reworked. Last year's
proposal failed to get traction because of concerns about the scope of the
bill and potential first amendment issues. Aggressive lobbying efforts by
retailers and the gaming industry - certain to be repeated this year - also
played a role in the defeat.
- Copied cat hardly resembles original -
Sure, you can clone your favorite cat. But the copy will not necessarily
act or even look like the original. Rainbow the cat is a typical calico with splotches of brown, tan and gold on

- US Internet Provider Told to Unmask File-Sharer -
A US court has ordered an internet service provider to reveal the identity
of a user accused of illegally downloading hundreds of copyrighted songs. The
ruling is a landmark for the music industry. The ISP involved, Verizon,
has said it will appeal. But if that is unsuccessful, the ruling will clear
the way for copyright holders to pursue many thousands of individuals
suspected of copyright infringement through peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing
networks.

- MSFIX: Unchecked Buffer in Locator Service Could Lead to Code Execution
- By default, the Locator service is enabled only on Windows 2000 domain
controllers and Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers; it is not enabled on
Windows NT 4.0 workstations or member servers, Windows 2000 workstations or
member servers, or Windows XP.
A security vulnerability results from an unchecked buffer in the Locator
service. By sending a specially malformed request to the Locator service, an
attacker could cause the Locator service to fail, or to run code of the
attacker's choice on the system.
