- No Gas in 'Grand Theft' Sequel - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City -- the
virtual thug's tale that's inspired record sales, drooling reviews and waves
of finger-wagging in the press -- is, in fact,
not much more than an uninspired sequel. Sure, you can now drive a
motorcycle, as well as a car. And there are those cool '80s tunes playing on
the stereo. But the game is pretty much the same as its PlayStation 2
predecessor, the groundbreaking Grand Theft Auto 3.
- Gibson to appear in new "Mad Max" film - Mel Gibson, who starred in
the 1979 cult hit "Mad Max,"
is returning to the franchise for a fourth time, according to the
entertainment trade paper Daily Variety. He will be paid a salary
approaching $25 million to star in "Fury Road" for original "Mad Max" director
George Miller, who has been crafting the script for the last three years. Once
again, Mad Max will roam the lawless, post-apocalpytic Australian outback. The
project is set up at Twentieth Century Fox. Studio insiders say the $104
million project will begin shooting in Australia next May as the targeted
start date.
- Psst! 'Two Towers,' cheap -- from pirates - Wanna catch the new
"Lord of the Rings" movie before it opens in cinemas later this month? That's
easily done if you live in, or visit, China and some other Asian markets --
and you're not worried about copyright laws, Variety reports. DVDs of "The
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" were
available in Shanghai two weeks ago for about $1 a pop, according to one
Western film industry executive who visited that city. The film opens in North
America on December 18.
- Wanted: Successor to flash memory - Current flash technology will
likely survive until 2006, when it will be replaced by flash technology
manufactured using a 65-nanometer process. The nanometer figure refers to the
distance between transistors on a chip. Chipmakers are currently selling
so-called 130 nanometer chips and
will soon make the move to 90 nanometers. One replacement AMD is exploring
is Quantum Well technology, which uses tiny wires, of approximately 5
nanometers, to store data. AMD will discuss this approach in a paper presented
at the San Francisco conference, Sander said.
- DALnet debilitated by DoS attacks - DALnet, one of the world's
biggest IRC service providers, has apologized to its users for disruptions
caused by an unusually fierce
DDoS attack over the weekend, whose effects are continuing to be felt.
"There are several reasons for this, including ongoing attacks and a loss of
servers. "This weekend, these problems have increased. DALnet has been under
an unusually strong, unusually persistent attack. These attacks are directed
at all DALnet client servers, rather than just a few." DALnet's
volunteer administrators is working with service providers and with police to
stop these attacks, which are far from easy to block.

- AMD's multiprocessing chips to support 333MHz system buses -
Sources close to AMD said that the firm will likely soon release
multiprocessing "MP" processors that support the faster 333MHz front side
buses that the Athlon XP supports. Those faster MP chips could be
introduced early next year, and possibly with the release of the MP 2600+.
Although the firm will not comment on unannounced products, we understand that
the move to a 333MHz system bus is a comparatively trivial matter.
