  • Video Game Fans Flock to Debut of 'Vice City' - Hundreds of video game fans, including Fort, turned out early Tuesday morning at an Electronics Boutique video game store outside Los Angeles for a first look at the criminal-adventure game, which features sunny beaches, scantily clad women, a 1980s soundtrack and edgy violence.
  • RealNetworks Releases Digital Media Player Code - RealNetworks on Tuesday made the source code for its Internet media playing software available for other software and hardware makers to use in their products, in a push to make its technology the industry standard before rival Microsoft Corp.
  • AOL removes wall between AIM, ICQ messaging users - AOL Time Warner Inc said it is testing ways for users of its popular AIM instant messaging service to chat with those using its ICQ service, largely due to the growth of ICQ in AOL Europe. The move marks the company's first step in letting the two largest messaging services communicate with each other.
  • 3GHz P4 launch date set for 14 November - Intel's Pentium 4 processor is set to reach 3GHz on 14 November. The chip, which will run at 3.06GHz, will also be the first desktop processor to include hyperthreading, the performance enhancing technology already found in Xeon server processors, that allows multiple software threads to run more efficiently on a single processor.
  • Microsoft to limit access to Office 11 - A representative acknowledged that Microsoft plans to offer the productivity suite, code-named Office 11, only for Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 and Windows XP. Microsoft started beta testing Office 11 last week, but some early participants found that they had been dropped from the program if they had planned to use older versions of Windows. They were dropped because Microsoft doesn't plan to offer Office 11 for Windows 98, 98 Second Edition, Me or NT. The Redmond, Wash.-based company already dropped support for Windows 95 with the release of Office XP in May 2001.
  • SuSE Linux makes its pitch for the Windows desktop - SuSE is pitching for the mainstream office client market with the announcement today of SuSE Linux Desktop, which it ominously describes as the "first element of SuSE's product campaign for the utilization of Linux on workstations." The product, which will ship from January, is aimed squarely at existing Windows users, companies and individuals with no previous Linux experience.
  • Dell's USB Key replaces floppy - Dell will offer a 16MB version of the USB Key device in place of a floppy drive for customers who opt to pair it with one of two Inspiron notebook models. The device uses flash memory and works by plugging into a PC's USB port. When connected, it appears on a computer's desktop as a removable hard drive, allowing people to drag and drop files for storage or to move them to another computer. When not in use, it fits easily into a shirt pocket.
  • Home robot can entertain the kids -  The robot uses the owner's home computer and Internet connection to answer questions or help a human shop online. All data transmissions between the machines are wireless, so the robot is still free to roam the house. The robot can also upload everything it hears and sees to the Internet. Say you're staying late at work and want to make sure your kids are doing their homework, Xie said. You can direct the robot around your house, find your kids and check up on them by viewing the robot's video online. hen the first batch of the robots is released next year they'll likely cost between $1,500 and $3,100.
  • Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) beta program - The Windows Sustained Engineering team is currently taking nominations for the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) beta program.
  • Star Trek: Nemesis Trailer  - Paramount Pictures is offering a new trailer to the December scheduled movie Star Trek: Nemesis, the latest incarnation of the Star Trek series.
  • Zoom Player v2.90 RC1 - Zoom Player is a robust Media and DVD Front-End Player. Zoom Player was designed to be simple at first glance while being remarkably dynamic and flexible when used to it's full potential.
  • DirectX 8.2 = DirectPlay 8.2 Final -  "We have found that Microsoft's DirectX8.1 will create a massive lag. To solve this problem Microsoft has created especially for New World Order and MS Combat Flight Simulator 3 a DirectX 8.1 patch (DirectPlay 8.2). The DirectPlay 8.2 beta patch (mirror) is set to expire on October 31, 2002 . However, the final release of the DirectPlay 8.2 patch will be available prior to this expiration date allowing plenty of time to upgrade the beta to the final release. DirectX 9 will also contain this patch." (thanks Warp2Search)

I don't like Real Player only due to the garbage they install on your system and all the settings they happen to mess up. WMP all the way! Wow, 65 percent drop in their share prices...hahahaha.

but now realplayer is open sourced, it's not going to be long till we see some stripped down real media player tho. Anyway, I think WiMP already won half of the battle with it bundled in every windows.

Your right Ritz, didn't think that with it open sourced that someone could provide us just the stuff we need and not the extraneous garbage. Well, I did like Real back when they first started streaming video....crude as it was back then, but still.
