  • Money-making games macro banned - The long-running game EverQuest, which has attracted the interest of economists because of its ability to create virtual economies, is suffering from a spate of virtual counterfeiting. According to the BBC, the game's makers have had to crack down on users who have found a way to bend the rules. The huge amount of virtual money being pumped into the game is threatening to bring the EverQuest economy to its knees. The influx of cash may have prompted hyperinflation and made it impossible for new players to get established.
  • Siemens announces its first 3G handset - The U10 is a mobile multimedia powerhouse. It has an integrated camera which rotates 180° and captures video with sound and still images. With high speed Internet access via WAP 2.0 it allows data streaming at up to 384kbs and offers the download of additional applications based on Java Wireless Technology as well as connectivity to peripheral devices such as laptop computers through Bluetooth, USB or infrared. The U10 supports video streaming with file formats such as MPEG-4 and music files like MP3 and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding). It has an expandable 2MB worth of memory.
  • Microsoft Smartphones To Reach US Next Year - Microsoft's long-awaited Windows-Powered Smartphone 2002 operating system was launched Tuesday--but not in the U.S. The new OS, previously known by the code-name Stinger, is available in a cell phone being distributed overseas by European carrier Orange SA. AT&T Wireless will be the first U.S. carrier to offer the OS in a cell phone expected to be released by mid 2003, Microsoft says.
  • Microsoft bulks up XP for devices - The software giant releases a new version of Windows XP Embedded, the company's operating system for cash registers, ATMs and other embedded devices.
  • IE flaws leave systems vulnerable - An Israeli Web-application company has warned users of Internet Explorer that nine related security flaws in the program could be used by malicious hackers to gain access to a victim's computer files.
  • Office 11 beta 1 released - Microsoft Corp. today announced the first beta release of its next version of Microsoft Office, code-named "Office 11." Expected to ship in mid-2003, "Office 11" is a significant step forward in the delivery of Microsoft's vision for improving information worker productivity.4
  • Sharp Unveils Glass Computer - Sharp Corp., Japan's largest maker of liquid crystal displays, unveiled a screen Tuesday with microprocessor circuitry applied directly onto the glass, enabling it to function like a computer.  The company hopes to have products available by 2005 using the advanced circuitry, perhaps even a "display card" that could store data and be carried around for use with various gadgets from games machines to mobile phones to car navigation systems.
  • KiSS releases first DivX compatible DVD player - The KiSS DP-450, set for release in late October, will enable playback of videos encoded in DivX versions 4.xx and 5.xx. Additionally, the two companies are working closely together to develop future products that will be "DivX Certified" and offer full compatibility with all versions of DivX video.
  • Airborne computer mouse unveiled - The difference is, this one's airborne. Meaning, like all optical mice, it doesn't need a desktop mouse pad. But it also doesn't need a desk. The $79.95 Ultra Cordless Optical Mouse from Gyration, Inc., of Saratoga, California, uses gyroscopic sensors to control the cursor movement as you move your wrist, arm, whatever through the air.

  • ATI shows off DDR-II graphics cards - ATI Enginners have demonstrated the world's first graphics cards powered by DDR-II technology using Radeon 9700 Pro VPUs (Visual Processing Unit).
  • UT2003 skeletons are out of the closet - As promised, Polycount's Rogue13 has posted yet another set of UT2003 source art files to offer the community for download at the bulk low price of a download. These are the raw MAX files, grouped per species for the animations of the character models.
