  • AMD delays Hammer for desktops  - Advanced Micro Devices says it has pushed back the release of its highly anticipated Hammer (details) chip for desktops by almost a quarter. It's also delaying the release of another Athlon chip.
  • Windows Media Player 9 tough to shake - Microsoft's latest media software doesn't include a mechanism for uninstalling the software on Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Windows XP operating system. Typically software makers like Microsoft provide a simple means of uninstalling software--particularly software such as Media Player 9 Series that has yet to be officially released.
  • 3GHz Pentium 4 Requires New Motherboards - One of the more interesting sessions at Intel's Fall Developer Forum 2002 covered the requirements for thermal management of the upcoming 3.06GHz Pentium 4. Pushing the clock rate that high really pushes the power envelope of the P4 to heights not seen since the original 0.18 micron Willamette, as the following chart demonstrates.
  • Intel Doubles Bandwidth with AGP 8x - Designed to satisfy the performance and scalability needs of today's workstation class graphics applications, Intel Corporation released the final AGP 3.0 specification. (AGP stands for Accelerated Graphics Port). The corresponding AGP 3.0 Design Guide (Rev. 2.0) will also be available this month.
  • Serial ATA Poised For Market Ramp - Serial ATA, the next-generation storage interconnect, is gaining steam within the computing industry. Serial ATA will be used to connect such internal storage devices as hard disks, DVDs and CD-R/Ws to the motherboard in desktop and mobile PCs, cost-sensitive servers and networked storage.
  •  eBlitz Shuttle MP3 Player - This particular MP3 player was only $30 to begin with but was on special with a $10 instant rebate and a $20 mail in rebate that made the thing free other than a couple of bucks in sales tax! The Shuttle SHB3108 came packaged in a box that more resembled a software box than one for an MP3 player. In fact both my wife and I looked past it on the shelf a couple of times before we realized that it was the item we were looking for. After doing a bit of research I found out why: The Shuttle MP3 player was marketed as more of a freebie when you buy Magix Music Maker and MP3 Maker software than it was a standalone MP3 player! It was a promotional package from the software company although CompUSA advertises it as the other way around, as an MP3 player with free music software.
  • AMD Athlon XP 2600+ vs Intel Pentium 4 2.53GHz - "I hear it almost every time I am out consulting a job, someone will say is that AMD 2100+ a 2.1GHz CPU or a 1.53Ghz CPU with a complete blank stare on their face. This time we see AMD coming at us with a new .13 Micron solution called the 2600+ (actual clock speed 2.13GHz). AMD has slated this chip to be the killer of the Intel 2.53GHz P4, which is the current affordable high end CPU that dominates the market."
  • KT333 Motherboard Roundup - The VIA KT333 chipset obviously supports DDR333 (PC2700) memory and can reach a peak bandwidth of 2.7GB/sec, 25% greater than the KT266A. Other key features include AGP4X, ATA-100 (ATA-133 in the VT8233A), integrated six channel advanced audio through the C-Media 8738 chip, six USB ports, LPC bus, and integrated 10/100Mbps ethernet and home PNA, AC-97 audio.
  • ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 64MB & 128MB  -  The Radeon 9000 comes in two flavours. The Standard and Pro version (refers to speed only). The standard uses a 250Mhz core with 200Mhz memory and the Pro uses a 275Mhz/275Mhz configuration. We are going to have a look at both cards to see is it better to have a 128MB Standard or a 64MB Pro card. We are also going to compare them to the Xabre 400 and the Geforce4MX.
  • First Watercooling Experiences - "OK. Installed board, cpu, mem and vid card. Water block and tubing. I was going for a closed loop system but got the bright idea to use a reservoir. I found a $1.99 Rubbermaid container that had a snug fitting lid. Made two 3/8 holes for the tubing. Added a mix of antifreeze(3oz), H2o(10oz). I again ran this over night before powering up the mobo" Read more...
  • BIOS Arcana: description and translation - The BIOS is that dark, cavernous pathway to your computer's very soul that both beckons and repels the would-be performance seeker. The BIOS can open up major performance pleasure for you, or it can hide that one little pesky setting that's causing your daily bluescreen, and you just don't know why. If you royally jack your BIOS, you can toast your system to the point which you may need a system reinstall or some new hardware. Don't get me wrong--it's not as though it's all that easy to do major damage to your system via the BIOS. It's just a good idea to know what you're playing with and not change things around willy-nilly.

On the 3Ghz P4 story, it's another fact that one should not need to worry about the upgradability when purchasing a motherboard. I always get the motherboard that known to work good with the cpu I am going to put in. Same situation with the new 8X AGP shit on those crappy SiS boards, don't be a dumbass buying these POS board, and even if you luckly enough to have one of those 8X AGP card, it will be no faster than 4X. And on the story of WiMP being uninstallable, that's a really sad trend of M$ stuffs, you are stuck with it, but again you will need it sooner or later since many sites now employ WMV format.
