- AI helps gamers keep on playing - Every computer game player knows
that real life can intrude at the most inopportune moments. Just when you are
completing a tricky flanking manoeuvre, or have got to the darkest point of a
dungeon, the phone will ring, a partner will want to talk or your dinner will
be on the table. But
Israeli game maker Majorem could have a solution to this problem, at least
for players of its forthcoming Ballerium online game. The company has
developed an artificial intelligence system that learns a gamer's style of
play and can take over and play for them if they have to spend time away from
the game.
- TI aims for single phone chip - Texas Instruments is gearing up to
combine
all four basic mobile phone functions onto one chip by 2004, CEO Thomas
Engibous said Wednesday.
- Intel has big nano plans - Sunlin Chou, senior vice president of
the technology and manufacturing group at Intel, will discuss the
company's
plans for nanotechnology, or the science of making chips with elements

Wistron confirms Xbox orders - Ending months of
speculation,
Wistron confirmed Tuesday it has become the second manufacturer of
Microsoft's Xbox and has begun pilot production in China, reported local
newspaper the Economic Daily News.

'Blank' display hides computer data - A computer screen
that looks blank to anyone not wearing a pair of special polarising glasses
has been developed by a Tokyo-based electronics company, Iizuka Denki Kogyo.
The company believes the modified LCD monitor will appeal to financial
institutions that need to keep sensitive information safe from prying eyes in
a busy environment.
Only authorised viewers wearing the special glasses would be able to read
data on the screen. Anyone looking over their shoulder would see nothing at
all. "To others, you would look like someone with sunglasses working in front
of a totally white screen," said an official in charge of development at IDK.
- Sharp introduces theater projector with built-in AV wireless receiver -
Sharp introduced on August 27 two theater projectors, one codenamed the
XV-Z90S with a built-in AV wireless receiver, said to be the world first
of its kind, and the XV-Z90.
- BitBoys Hardware! -
Axe graphics processor is designed for the volume desktop PC market. It
supports full OpenGL 1.3 and Microsoft DirectX 8.1 feature set with MatrixAA
anti-aliasing. Axe builds on Bitboys patented XBA technology, and a complete
prototype chip has been manufactured by Infineon Technologies on their 0.17
micron embedded DRAM process. As Infineon has closed down its embedded DRAM
fabrication line, Bitboys will not bring Axe to the PC desktop market. The
processor contains over 6 million logic gates and 12M bytes of embedded DRAM
memory, working together with external SDRAM memory (up-to 128M bytes). The
memory is connected to the graphics engine via a multi-channel memory
management unit that provides the extreme bandwidth required by the core pixel
processor.

build business momentum further by introducing the
Barton-core Athlon XP processor in October.
- New peripherals from Microsoft - Today Microsoft presented
an unusually vast collection of peripheral devices, including 7 new mice
