- Lamo bumped from NBC after hacking them - How did a mediagenic
hacker like Adrian Lamo
get
himself bumped last week from a scheduled appearance on the NBC Nightly
News with Tom Brokaw? Perhaps with his impromptu on-camera intrusion into the
peacock network's own computers.
- Felt-tip marker hack for copy-protect CDs rubbed out -
Israel-based Midbar Tech announced yesterday that 10 million CDs using
its Cactus Data Shield technology have been released in Japan, bringing the
total number of music CDs using the controversial copy-protection utility to
about 30 million. Marjie Hadad, Midbar spokesperson, said the CDs, which
implement the CDS-200 protection scheme, will play on computers - unlike
previous CDs released with Midbar's CDS-100 technology, which caused myriad
difficulties for PC users who attempted to play purchased CDs in their
computers' CD-ROM drives, as well as in DVD players and car CD drives. Windows
users had the fewest problems; by installing a special utility included on the
copy-protected CDs their PCs were able to play the music.
- New Hard-Drive Tech Overcomes Magnetic Memory Problems - Hard-drive
maker Seagate said
it has overcome a significant challenge in magnetic memory with a new
technology capable of achieving far beyond today's storage densities -- up to
as great as 50 terabits per square inch. Currently, the highest storage
densities hover around 50 gigabits per square inch, but Seagate said its
heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology could break through the
so-called superparamagnetic limit -- a memory boundary based on data bits so
small they become magnetically unstable.
- AMD Reveals Athlon XP 2700+ on the 7th October - According to some
Taiwanese sources, AMD
will officially reveal its Athlon XP 2700+ processor on the 7th of
October. This CPU is the first to implement 333MHz system bus on Athlon
platform. It is expected that the novelty will be based on the latest
Thoroughbred core stepping 1, just like the current Athlon XP 2400+ and 2600+,
and will work at 2.17GHz.

- DirectX 9 postponed - Microsoft and its partners, including ATI,
had suggested it would be introduced in early October, but now
TheInquirer
is reporting that it's postponed until the end of November.
- Kaspersky Anti-Virus Maintenance Pack 3 for Windows - Kaspersky
Labs announces the release of its
Maintenance Pack 3 for the
following Kaspersky products (available in Russian, English, German, French,
Spanish, Polish and Estonian). Maintenance Pack 3 includes all changes
contained in the earlier released Maintenance Pack 2.
