  • 'Doom III' destroys competition from E3 convention - Doom III," which generated plenty of buzz during the show, could easily be called the overall winner since it racked up several awards. Not only did this sequel to the popular first-person shooter "Doom" get Best of Show, but it also garnered awards for the best PC game, the best action game and earned a couple of special commendations for its outstanding graphics and sound design. One game critic said the presentation literally rocked the theater.
  • Tooth phone implants - The "tooth phone" consists of a tiny vibrator and a radio wave receiver implanted into a tooth during routine dental surgery. The phone was designed by James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau. The implant does not yet have its own microchip installed, but Auger says the technology is tried and tested, and a fully functional phone could be put together in no time at all.
  • Philips develops technology for small form factor optical storage - Philips has demonstrated the world's first fully functional miniature optical disc drive using blue laser technology. Up to 1 Gbyte of data can be stored on a single-sided optical disc of just 3 cm in diameter, matching the size constraints of portable devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones, PDAs and portable Internet devices. This prototype illustrates Philips' leadership in optical storage technology, which is driven by superb media robustness and the low cost per Mbyte of the storage medium, making it optimally suited for large-scale distribution of pre-recorded content.

  • Overclocking the P4 1.7GHz on 800MHz Bus - Soltek sent us word of their success in running a Pentium 4 1.7GHz on an 200MHz (800MHz QDR) front-side bus. Here's a quote from what they had to say - This BIOS can fix AGP clock at 66Mhz & PCI clock at 33Mhz when overclocking; by this way, you can get a more stable system. Our R&D team have sucessfully overclock this mainboard to 200Mhz (200 x 4 = 800Mhz FSB)! This is certainly a great news for overclockers; however, please note that now most CPUs have been locked, it is very difficult to find an unlocked CPU.
  • Apache 2.0.39 Released - This version of Apache is principally a security and bug fix release. Of particular note is that 2.0.39 addresses and fixes the issues noted in CAN-2002-0392 (mitre.org) [CERT VU#944335] regarding a vulnerability in the handling of chunked transfer encoding as described above.

"The invention raises the prospects of financial traders receiving the latest stock market bulletins while at the cinema and politicians tuning in to secret briefings from advisers while being quizzed by opponents." A simpleton like George Bush is already told what to say by his "advisors." This would just make it easier to have a president-by-remote-control.
