- 'Doom III' destroys competition from E3 convention - Doom III,"
which generated plenty of buzz during the show, could easily be called the overall
winner since it racked up several awards. Not only did this sequel to the popular
first-person shooter "Doom" get Best of Show, but it also garnered awards for
the best PC game, the best action game and earned a couple of special commendations for
its outstanding graphics and sound design. One game critic said the presentation literally
rocked the theater.
- Tooth phone implants - The "tooth
phone" consists of a tiny vibrator and a radio wave receiver implanted into a
tooth during routine dental surgery. The phone was designed by James Auger and Jimmy
Loizeau. The implant does not yet have its own microchip installed, but Auger says the
technology is tried and tested, and a fully functional phone could be put together in no
time at all.
- Philips develops technology for small form factor optical storage -
Philips has demonstrated the world's first fully functional miniature optical disc drive using blue laser technology. Up to 1
Gbyte of data can be stored on a single-sided optical disc of just 3 cm in diameter,
matching the size constraints of portable devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones,
PDAs and portable Internet devices. This prototype illustrates Philips' leadership in
optical storage technology, which is driven by superb media robustness and the low cost
per Mbyte of the storage medium, making it optimally suited for large-scale distribution
of pre-recorded content.
- AMD releases Athlon MP 2100+ - AMD announced the Athlon MP 2100+ on Wednesday, its fastest processor for workstations
and servers to date. The Athlon MP 2100+, running at 1.73GHz, dethrones the 1.67GHz Athlon
MP 2000+. The MP series processors are designed for dual-processor servers and
workstations. MP stands for "multiprocessor.
- ATI R300 story comes spookily true - The set of presentations on the
Chinese site will irritate ATI big time because according to The Inquirer sources it
wanted to keep Nvidia in the dark for as long as possible. The R300 debuts on the 17th
of July, according to this information.

- Overclocking the P4 1.7GHz on 800MHz Bus - Soltek sent us word of their
success in running a Pentium 4 1.7GHz on an 200MHz (800MHz QDR) front-side bus. Here's a
quote from what they had to say - This BIOS can fix AGP clock at 66Mhz & PCI clock at
33Mhz when overclocking; by this way, you can get a more stable system. Our R&D team
have sucessfully overclock this mainboard to 200Mhz (200 x 4 = 800Mhz FSB)! This is
certainly a great news for overclockers; however, please note that now most CPUs have been
locked, it is very difficult to find an unlocked CPU.
- Apache 2.0.39 Released - This version of Apache is
principally a security and bug fix release. Of particular note is that 2.0.39 addresses
and fixes the issues noted in CAN-2002-0392
(mitre.org) [CERT
VU#944335] regarding a vulnerability in the handling of chunked transfer encoding as
described above.
- Slackware 8.1 is Released - Slackware 8.1 has been released. Highlights of this release include
KDE 3.0.1, GNOME 1.4.1 (with new additions like Evolution), the long-awaited Mozilla 1.0
browser, support for many new filesystems like ext3, ReiserFS, JFS, and XFS, and support
for several new SCSI and ATA RAID controllers.
- Cumulative Patches for Excel and Word for Windows (Q324458) -
Recommendation: Customers should apply the patches. Affected Software: Microsoft Excel 2000, Office
2000, Excel 2002, Word 2002, Office XP.
- Winamp 3 Build 478 (RC1) - Yet another new
version of WinAMP has been released. Please note, this build is aimed primarily
towards developers, but definitely gives everyone a good taste of the progress since the
last release. What is new: Full ID3v1/v2 Tag Editing, Fully Functional Media Library,
Improved Preference Selection, Full Support for EQ presets, many bug fixes.
- Tweak-XP 1.34 - Tweak-XP bundles more
than 22 different utilities in one: it was developed to combine both tweaking and
optimizing features to increase the speed of your Windowsr XP system. All settings can be
done without having any former knowledge, since Tweak-XP informs the user in detail about
each option.

build 1129 has been released.

- Active Ports 1.4 - Active Ports - is a FREE and easy to use tool for Windows NT/2000/XP

port.
