  • Better than Google? - Hoping to attract more mass appeal for an on-line search engine with a cult following, AlltheWeb.com on Monday declared that it indexes more Internet information than long-time pace-setter Google. AlltheWeb, owned by Norway's Fast Search & Transfer, says its database spans 2.1 billion Web pages, just ahead of the 2.07 billion scanned by Google at the end of last week. AlltheWeb has been quietly building upon its previous foundation of 800 million pages over the past two months.
  • Hackers cripple US news sites - Foxnews.com, theweatherchannel.com, espn.com and ABCNEWS.com have suffered denial of service attacks which disrupted services to hundreds of thousands of internet users. The attacks began on Thursday and caused intermittent outages and slowdowns on the sites before normal service was restored on Friday night.
  • Bomb.com for sale - The owners of bomb.com are selling their domain to save their family from financial ruin. The bidding for bomb.com starts at $15,000 although Bryan reckons it could be worth as much as $170,000. He's looking to make at least $25,000 - with $15,000 clearing his debts and the rest being used to cover any future medical bills.
  • Apache Vulnerability Announced - Versions of the Apache web server up to and including 1.3.24 and 2.0 up to
    and including 2.0.36 and 2.0.36-dev versions contain a bug in the routines which deal with invalid requests which are encoded using chunked encoding. This bug can be triggered remotely by sending a carefully crafted invalid request. This functionality is enabled by default.
  • Scientists conquer laser beam teleportation - Scientists in Canberra have successfully teleported a laser beam for the first time in Australia. Dr Lam says the experiment involved laser light which is made up of photons which are quite different from any solid material. "At the moment physicists are still puzzling over how to actually do it with a solid material, so we have to start with an atom," he said. The discovery has applications for the development of quantum computers and telecommunications.

  • Motorola debuts memory chip - Motorola has developed a memory chip that extends battery life and improves the performance of phones and PCs. A spokesman explained that the processor uses the traditional magnetic materials found on a silicon semiconductor chip.
  • Microsoft tightens security for Wi-Fi - At the 802.11 West conference in Seattle, Microsoft announces that it will enhance security measures for Windows 2000 and handheld devices.
