- Xbox 'Emulator' Front For Online Money-Making Scam - A new fraud
by Internet scam artists attempts to tap into video game aficionados' burning desire to
play Microsoft Xbox games on their personal computers. An "Xbox
emulator" currently being offered for free on the Web is actually a Trojan horse
designed to covertly rack up money for its authors using pay-for-click and other schemes,
malicious code experts said. Instead of enabling users to run popular Xbox games
such as "Halo" on their PCs, executing the fake emulator's installation program,
"EMU_xbox.exe", merely produces error messages.
- GSM Phone Cloning Possible - IBM has created a safeguard against a
new technique to exploit an old vulnerability in some cellular telephones, but the
best protection, Big Blue says, is for consumers to keep track of their phones.
In the unlikely event that such a scenario plays out, unauthorized calls and transactions
- such as banking and stock trades - could be made on certain GSM (global system for
mobile communications) phones. The hole in subscriber identification module (SIM)
cards used in GSM phones was discovered several years ago, but a new method to extract key
data from the cards is far less involved, said Charles Golvin, a senior analyst with
Forrester Research.
- Kill the MSN Messenger - Microsoft has issued a 'critical'
security update after the discovery of a buffer overflow vulnerability which may allow
an attacker to execute malicious code against the majority of MSN Messenger users.
- Pirate bots seek ports to hide plunder - Internet Security
Systems, which monitors networks around the world from seven points of presence, including
a "war room" in Atlanta, has seen an increase in IRC
traffic in the last month, according to Grant Slender, principal ISS consultant for
Australasia. The traffic surge relates to an increase in the use of IRC bots by the
file-sharing community to swap files and pirated software across the Internet.
- Big Blue's grid guns for gamers - IBM launched the backbone for
what may well be the
next-generation internet late last year, setting up a grid computing data centre in
Oxford. Grid computing works on the same principle as distributed computing programs like
SETI@home, except that enormously powerful data centres are linked up around the globe
instead of desktop machines.

well worth it. A member in our forums found a little hack, actually a registry edit that
