- WinHEC 11 - Microsoft's $200 Billion Mosh Pit - Is
Microsoft putting a nail in the coffin of PC gaming? Could be. New technologies
Freestyle, Mira, and Longhorn take center stage. Also on the agenda, AMD's got an updated
product roadmap, MSI sneaks in 845GL, SiS is on 550, VIA has Eden, designing a quiet PC,
Trident comes out with the first DX8.1 notebook graphics chip, and just about everything
you need to know to build hardware for just about everything Microsoft can squeeze a
Windows license out of.
- The IE back-button attack - Swedish security researcher Andreas
Sandblad has discovered that the MS Internet Explorer history list allows
JavaScript in the URLs. The code will execute in the same zone as the last URL
visited. The error page generated by IE functions in the local computer zone. Thus when an
error page is generated, JavaScript can be injected in the history and executed by using
the back button.
- Software pirates face 10 years in chokey - Experts have attacked
the decision to increase jail sentences for software piracy, arguing that it targets the wrong groups.
A Private Member's Bill covering copyright infringements has just been passed by the
Commons, and will now go to the Lords. It could become law by the autumn, and would see
maximum jail sentences raised from two years to 10.
- IBM to left HDD biz? - Separately, IBM and Hitachi also said
they plan to combine their various hard-disk drive operations into a new, stand-alone
joint venture. Hitachi would own 70 percent of the joint venture and pay IBM for its
hard drive assets, subject to the completion of negotiations, the companies said.
- Athlon XP 'Thoroughbred' - New AMD Chip - AMD on Wednesday added
a new Thoroughbred to
its stable of PC processors. The chipmaker launched its line of new Mobile Athlon XP
processors, a new generation of 130-nanometer mobile chips based on its newest processor
core, called Thoroughbred. The chip core consumes less power. The chip also has a higher
bus speed than the previous Athlon processor, the Athlon 4, allowing for more data to be
shuttled between the chip and RAM.
- Take Control of Your Computer with ATI - ATI Technologies Inc.
today announced
the new REMOTE WONDER. Available through ATI's website (www.ati.com) for (US) $49.99,

Gamesurround Fortissimo II, a soundcard that is advertised as being made for both the
hardcore and casual gamer. Priced at around $60 U.S., it fits in nicely between Hercules'
high-end GameTheatreXP ($150) and their entry-level MuseXL ($30).
- AOpen AK77-333 (VIA KT333) Review - The AOpen
AK77-333 performed well during the benchmarking. The stability of the AK77-333 was
outstanding and the memory performance was typical of what we have seen with KT333 based
motherboards.
- Samsung SyncMaster 900IFT Review - The 900IFT
is built using Samsung's patented DynaFlat technology, however, it's not a true flat
monitor since the dot mask is curved. What I mean is, if you look specifically at the
corners of the 900IFT, you'll see that the display actually curves inwards.
- Building an LED caselight - Lots of case modders light up their
PCs. They usually do it with neon tubes of one kind or another. With a small amount of
effort, though, you can assemble an LED array that works as well as a neon, is easier to
mount, and will last much longer. I've done just that, and written a tutorial about it.
- Win XP Performance Tweaking Guide - I have broken this
guide into 6 parts. Networking, file system, memory performance, freeing up memory,
startup/shutdown and then the other stuff. I've tried to pack as much performance related
tweaking here as I can but there's always more to be uncovered. I will update this article
as frequently as possible. I know there's a million tweaks that I'm missing here but I am
trying to keep this guide dedicated to tweaks that directly affect your performance. I'll
put together a second guide about the annoyances and other things but keep in mind this is
ONLY performance stuff.
- Nvidia Refresh Rate Problems Explained - Nvidia has
released documentation on exactly how the driver handles the new method. There
are things in there even I didn't know, and it's quite an informative read.

control.
