- Midnight launch for Xbox - Microsoft's first gaming console, the
Xbox, will be launched in the
UK on 14th March. In response, games retailer Electronics Boutique is opening its
stores late on the 13th March, so that customers can receive pre-ordered Xboxes at
midnight.
- "Phantom Menace" Typing Just A Microsoft Speech Feature
- Random words and characters mysteriously appearing on the screens of some Windows XP and
Office XP users are
not the work of phantom hackers or a sign that users' systems are possessed by demons.
It's just Microsoft's voice recognition system running slightly amok, the company said. In
recent weeks, several XP users have posted messages to Internet discussion lists and
newsgroups reporting that text is automatically appearing in Internet Explorer's address
bar or in Outlook e-mail messages or Word documents as users compose them.
- ICQ hack theories flood into Vulture Central - A search of the AOL Mirabilis ICQ whitepages reveals hundreds of accounts
all with this address (registered in countries such as China and Egypt). We began to suspect a
mass hack.
- AOL embraces Linux and Mozilla, plans to drop MS Explorer -
Sources inside AOL and Red Hat say AOL is making a major internal switch to Linux, and the long-rumored AOL default
browser switch from Microsoft's Internet Explorer to Mozilla -- or at least Mozilla's
Gecko rendering engine -- is well under way, but AOL will probably not offer an AOL client
for Linux in the forseeable future.
- Flaw weakens Linux computers (updated) - A buffer overflow
causes key memory-management functions in the zlib compression library to fail, a
condition that could allow
a smart attacker to compromise Linux computers.
- New drives rewrite HP DVD+RW line - Hewlett-Packard
announces two new
DVD+RW drives that aim to address one of the major criticisms of the DVD rewritable
and recordable formats: compatibility.
- Virgin and Playboy in porn pact - Mobile operator Virgin is
considering jumping on the
porn bandwagon. The UK mobile operator is in talks with Playboy over the delivery of
soft porn via the handset.
- Exploding star may have sparked Earth disaster - Piecing
together clues from astronomy, paleontology and geology, scientists have proposed that an ancient supernova may have damaged
the protective ozone layer around the Earth and wreaked havoc on terrestrial life.
- Hunger Hormone Found - British researchers said on Monday they
had isolated a "hunger hormone" that dramatically boosts human
food consumption, raising the prospects of new treatments for both the obese and the
malnourished.
- Recordable DVD Drives ~ Plus and minus all over again -
I'll start by giving a brief overview of each drive and its capabilities. Later on, we'll

- Sony Introduces Two Handhelds - Sony Japan has just introduced two new
cutting-edge handhelds. The PEG-NR70 and PEG-NR70V both have built-in keyboards and
320 by 480 color screens. They also have built-in MP3 and ATRAC3 audio players. In
addition, the PEG-NR70V has a built-in camera.
- GeoCities offers new paid services - As previously reported,
Yahoo recently told GeoCities' home page publishers it would begin charging fees for people
using FTP. A Yahoo executive attributed the price change to abuse by nonpaying users
of FTP and remote loading, and to attempts to address costs of offering the service. One
new GeoCities feature, called GeoCities Plus, will cost $4.95 a month with a one-time $10
setup fee. The service doesn't serve ads and offers 25MB of storage, FTP access and
additional bandwidth.
- Creative Buys 3D Labs - Creative Technology today
announced a definitive agreement under which Creative will acquire 3Dlabs Inc.,
Ltd.for a combination of US$1.20 per share in cash and US$2.40 per share in Creative stock
for each share of 3Dlabs.
