Should XP pirates get SP2? - If Microsoft denies Windows XP pirates access to its SP2 upgrade, the result would hurt the Internet to protect Microsoft's bottom line. Try this analogy: suppose a car thief drove to the dealership and insisted that they perform brake repairs required by a recall notice, for free, on the stolen car. Substitute "software" for car, and "pirate" for "thief" and you have the situation Microsoft faces as it begins the roll-out of its much-anticipated (and much needed) Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP. The debate is not only about rewarding copyright infringement, but also weighs profits against the need for security for the Internet community as a whole. Unfortunately, Microsoft has adopted a middle ground, intending to give a nod to security, while really attempting to preserve its bottom line.
Microsoft Extends Product Support - Microsoft next month will institute a new product lifecycle policy that extends support for Microsoft products to a minimum of 10 years from the current seven years, the company says. In addition to extending the support period, the updated policy provides increased support for IT infrastructure security assistance, Microsoft said at its Tech Ed conference in San Diego.
Microsoft.com Hacked and Defaced - Microsoft Press has been defaced (screenshot) yesterday's evening by a group named "Outlaw Group". Although the group doesn't seem to have caused much damage, this is clearly an embarassment for Microsoft.com webmasters. A clear example of where patches need to be applied. Microsoft tightens database security - The company plans to announce on Tuesday that its SQL Server 2005 database--developed under the code-name Yukon--will include new encryption capabilities to make it more difficult for hackers and other unauthorized users to access information. Microsoft already offers tools to encrypt data sent over a network between SQL Server and client applications. The new release of SQL Server, due early next year, will encrypt data stored within the database, making it much more resistant to attacks, said Kirsten Ward, a product manager at Microsoft.
Big brother is watching you shop - Two new creepy RFID applications have been developed by Sprint which allow store owners to identify customers as soon as they step through the shop doors. Provided the customer is kitted out with a specially designed loyalty card, the monitoring application will recognise them as soon as they step within eight feet of an RFID reader. A customisable computer avatar will pop up on the monitoring software to identify them.
RIAA Bags 493 More Swappers - U.S. music industry group says it has sued 493 more people for copyright infringement as part of its campaign to stop consumers from copying music over the Internet. The Recording Industry Association of America has now sued nearly 3,000 individuals since last September in an attempt to discourage people from copying songs through peer-to-peer networks like Kazaa and LimeWire.
Mac OS fix fails to plug security hole - Security experts warn that a patch released by Apple last week to shore up the operating system against malicious Web sites does not actually solve the problem.
Off-topic: Eurofighter at risk of 'catastrophic failure - Problems with the computer systems on board the Eurofighter jet, signed into service with the RAF less than two weeks ago, could cause a "catastrophic" failure in flight, according to a confidential Ministry of Defence report leaked to former BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan. The report contained the findings and recommendations of test pilots who had flown the jet for eight months. They concluded that the problems are so bad that the plane should not be used for complex manoeuvres, such as those in aerial combat, and should not fly in cloud without a second, experienced, pilot on board.

Drive makers ready 5x DVD-RAM burners - The RAM Promotion Group (RAMPRG), the organisation behind the DVD-RAM specification, today lauded 5x recording speed drives from Hitachi-LG Data Storage and Panasonic as a sign that the technology is going places. The two drives, Hitachi's 5x Super Multi and Panasonic's SW-9573-C, ship "later this year", though suitable media will become available from Maxell and Panasonic, in June and August, respectively.
SanDisk Combines Storage, Wi-Fi - SanDisk is unveiling a pair of products designed to make flash memory cards more versatile. The SanDisk 256MB + Wi-Fi SD Combination Card offers 802.11b wireless connectivity as well as 256MB of storage, while the new 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter helps notebook users manage multiple memory cards. The Combination Card will ship in June with a list price of $130, SanDisk says.
ATI sources substrates for 0.11-micron GPU - DigiTimes is reporting that ATI is sourcing flip chip substrates from Phoenix Precision for a 0.11-micron graphics chip. A first shipment of 500,000 units is schedule for next month, suggesting that ATI may have 0.11-micron graphics chips available in volume production before long.

What a typical Register.co.uk article. "Lets present some outlandish analogy to provide the illusion of credit to whatever opinion we happen to randomly dream up while taking a dump" Microsoft can do whatever they want to their OS, and that includes discontinuing support. If enough dislike it, then an alternative OS will take it's place.

This is the REAL FX5900 here. I'm clarifying this because you won't believe what you're about to read. NVidia's comments about ATI are totally out of line. The X800 XT is not an act of desperation. So what if the X800 is based on old hardware and software; I don't think the 6800U is new from the ground up. Honestly, big deal if ATI doesn't implement 3.0 shader support -- it's their loss. And regards ATi misleading the public regarding their products clock speeds ..... even us guys on Gameguru Mania knew they would change them. And lastly... ATi have 'suspicious' drivers... well, us guys on Gameguru Mania have been saying for LONG TIME - no surprises here! Surprised? Like I said, this is the REAL FX5900 writing.

people keep saying "SP2 will be cracked". its already cracked fools. its been cracked since sp1 came out. keygens make valid corperate keys. they cant blacklist them all since corperations need to use them, and they cant change the verification algorithm without reissuing every corperation with new keys

ms can do whatever they like. i'm not a cheap bitch. if i'm gonna use something like xp i'm gonna buy it. i mean how bloody cheap are u that you can't afford windows. i'll stick to ripped versions of games, which are more worth my time. @fx5900, well the simple fact it is based on old hardware and software means there is no substantiation for the price tag ATI will put on the card. if you are claiming the 6800 is old hardware/software then do so. ATI is a bunch of cheap pricks, they lie to public all the time. Mislead people and provide probably the worst driver support. Of course what can you do when they have moronic public speakers on rage3d. and FX5900 u should know the game. slander my company i'll slander yours. that's competition.

Moronic public speakers? Talking about yourself? :) I really think every single company should deal with their OWN product. Remember the coca vs pepsi war? They killed each other until the law forced them to do otherwise. Why don't the governments apply the same rules here?

Being nVidia fanboy for some good years now, I still dont exactly like those kind of "marketing strategy". Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this Perez guy worked for 3DFX before? The company that invented the dirty trash-talk without any backup? Just looking to blaim him, because this doesn't look like my favored company :/ Some things are true, however. Bringing different clockspeeds to testers is cheap. Misleading ppl from PS3 "because we dont have it" -- cheap too. Why cant companies just talk trough their products' advantages, not some cheasy commercial guys..?!

When I started reading FX5900's post, I was like "nah, couldn't be him. He's saying that nvidia was wrong on something". Then I kept reading and you reverted back. You almost had me thinking you were a fake. I guess the war rages onward. Is pixel shader3 really that great? Well Farcry sure looks good using it. Am I gonna hop the fence back to nVidia's side just for Farcry? No Will I ever hop the fence back to nVidia? Sure, if they put out a good card like they did back in the day. The jury is still out on this newest gen.

Far cry looks identical with PS 2.0 and 3.0. i dunno where people got the idea from that 3.0 is gonna look a whole lot better. It just does the same job slightly faster and fewer rendering passes than 2.0. its propably all based on the mislabled 1.1 vs 3.0 comparison.

I have nothing to say but "Bravo" to FX5900's post :). Well put, and I totally agree. The slander was uncalled for, but the whole ATI driver thing I have to agree was seen a long while back. While it cant be a proud moment for ATI, we just have to hope they will straighten up their act on this. Because if we ever loose one of the companies the other will just start to slack technology wise knowing there's no competition. That and the winner can take advantage of it and gouge us in prices lol. Its like Good Vs Evil... (Not saying one company is good lol) We just cant have one existing without the other.

Don't get me wrong... I still think the 6800U non-retail tests own the X800XT and is a better investiment on one factor alone: better drivers. But like i said, nVidia was wrong to make those comments. Leave the ATI-bashing to the SpankMaster. :-)

Hey I just look at that nVidia vs ATI. I see nothing wrong there. If there is wrong info, then ATI should sue nVidia. Simple as that. If not. STFU. Truth hurts. I love that comment, x800 is not but a 9800 on steroids. Go figure! I mean they got quotes to names. If it's false ATI then sue them. If not, then it's all obviously truth.

Nah, took a break from painkiller(didn't want to finish it, rather delay finishing it). Playing DC and BF:V. Other than that just havent felt like adding to the stupidity here, until today that is. Working on my own gaming site and working at stealing/researching where HX gets his news from.. I think I got maybe 80% of his sources now, I'm missing like maybe 4 news articles from his daily postings.. his RSS feed doesn't work on his site either so I can't even put a direct feed from ggmania. While i will agree with you fx5900 that nvidia shouldn't have done it, it's all quoted statements in the most part and I don't see ATI defending themselves very well either. But you know lately I saw lots of comments from ATI fanboys saying nvidia cheated on 3dmark, well so did ATI you dumbasses. And they still are and they pumping out no different stories than nvidia. If people don't know by now the drivers have executable detection, then maybe it's time to move to console! As I have lots of web design experience I offered to help HX but he's ignored it all. So if you can't join em, beat em. Oh and I would have full featured forums. Not this nightmare comment system.
