Niantic Kept the Map, Sold the Game

Niantic Spatial
says
its Large Geospatial Model is trained on more than 30 billion posed real-world images and 300 million user scans.
Much of that ground-level set came from Pokémon Go and Scaniverse players who scanned PokéStops and landmarks for in-game rewards.
In 2025 Niantic sold the games to Scopely and kept the mapping business; Spatial told PC Gamer that Pokémon Go data no longer flows to it after that sale.
In December 2025 Spatial partnered with Vantor (formerly Maxar Intelligence) on camera-based positioning for GPS-denied air and ground vehicles; Vantor holds U.S. government contracts.
Spatial says the Vantor deal does not include sharing the raw player scans - the models were trained on them, the files were not handed over.
No public document proves the photos themselves fly military drones.
