  • Fizzer - A Multi-threat Worm That Attacks Via E-mail and KaZaA - "Fizzer" is a classic network worm that propagates across the Internet. It arrives to the target computers as an executable file and activates when a user launches it. Once this happens "Fizzer" creates 5 additional files and modifies the Windows registry auto-run section so that the worm loads each time the operating system is started. To spread via KaZaA, "Fizzer" creates multiple copies of itself under random names, and places these files in the victim computer's dedicated KaZaA file-sharing folder, if in fact this directory exists. By doing so, "Fizzer" becomes "available" to all other network participants.
  • Telewest takes home broadband to 2Mbps - Cable firm Telewest launched its 2Mbps home broadband internet service today after a month-long trial. The firm signed up 1,500 of its 1Mbps users for a pilot phase last month to evaluate interest, but admitted that it didn't expect the service to be snapped up by its mainstream customers.
  • Hacking victim goes postal  - Cleveland man named Biswanath Halder, who claims his Web site was destroyed by a hacker, took hostages at gunpoint on the campus of Case Western Reserve University on Friday. Tragically, the hacking victim killed a young postgraduate student at the university, Norman Wallace aged 30, and wounded two others when he fired indiscriminately in an apparent fit of rage.
  • Xbox and Linux in car multimedia - These pages shows the use of 'off the shelf' components to construct an integrated in-car multimedia and entertainment system. The back end of the system is powered by a Microsoft Xbox which is running a mod-chip and a version of Linux developed by the Xbox-Linux developent team. This is a variant of Debian/GNU Linux but heavily stripped down by myself so that the system boots and loads the interface in a respectable time (<40 seconds from power on). With a 40gb replacement drive, I have multiple albums of music, several films, a few video game emulators (Arcade, NeoGeo and Super Nintendo) and music videos to play along with the music.
  • LG.Philips LCD Interview  - DigiTimes has posted an exclusive interview with Bruce Berkoff, Executive Vice President, Marketing, LG.Philips LCD. Because of its length, they've split it into four parts, to be featured over the next four days. The first part, today, covers an overview of the LCD industry with a discussion of China's position.
  • Longhorn Will support All DVD-W Formats - Microsoft plans to support all major writable DVD formats in future versions of its Windows operating system, the software maker has said. Native support for DVD-RAM, DVD-RW/-R and DVD+RW/+R will start with Windows Longhorn, the successor to Windows XP slated for launch in 2005, according to a Microsoft spokesperson.
  • First Athlon 64 Review in French Magazine - A brand new French magazine call PC Performance, focused on hardware, and more precisely about getting the max from processors, graphic cards and motherboards, claims it has published the first Athlon 64 review ever. The results, even though me must considere them as temporary, show some impressive datas. Athlon 64 looks to be 70% than competitors running at similar speed (1.4GHz).
  • 7 Different 15-Inch LCD Display Round-up - All screens were connected via their analogous 15-pins VGA-connector to a PC with an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor, 512MB DDR333 and a Geforce 4 TI4200 128MB Deluxe. Screens with a digital DVI-connector were connected on the DVI-output of the Geforce 4 Deluxe.
  • Samsung Syncmaster 191N LCD Review - GideonTech has published a review of 19 inch LCD display from Samsung.
  • Samsung ML-1750 Laser Printer Review - Without a doubt, this laser printer is dedicated to a home-office or small-business role. The main selling points; 17ppm printing speed, 8MB of printer memory, USB 2.0 and Parallel connectivity, 250-sheet cassette, 166-MHz RISC processor, 1200dpi class resolution, and full PCL6 compliance. Best of all, in-box, the ML-1750 is compatible with 17 flavors of operating systems ranging from Mac OS to Unix, PC to Linux. Introduced at the recent CeBIT 2003 show, Samsung was proud the tote the ML-1750 as the smallest 17ppm printer in the world!
  • On The GeForce FX 5900 And Games - HomeLAN takes a look at NVIDIA's newly announced GeForce FX 5900 graphics chips, based on information supplied by NVIDIA as well as talking with their product manager Steve Sims about their new high end product.
  • The 256MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro - The 256MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro's board layout is similar to the 128MB model, but with a few notable exceptions. The front and back sides of the PCB each have eight, 16MB DDR-II modules installed, clocked at 700MHz (350MHz DDR). The 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro has DDR-I type memory clocked at 680MHz (340MHz DDR). The increase in memory clock speed brings total bandwidth up to 22.4GB/Sec, versus 21.8GB/Sec on the 128MB card. The core is clocked at 380MHz on both versions of the 9800 Pro, which is cooled by the same aluminum HSF. The 256MB board also has the added benefit of heatsinks installed on the RAM.  So, what does having 256MB of memory installed on a video card mean to gamers? Well, there are three main benefits. First, having more memory available means game developers can use larger, higher quality textures without having to swap data in and out of system memory.
  • XFX GeForce4 Ti 4800-SE review - The XFX GeForce4 Ti 4800SE is an average interpretation of a GPU that's been made redudant by a newer iteration of cards. NVIDIA seem keen on pushing their highly specified new cards, at the expense of pure all-out speed. The GeForce4 Ti series has served NVIDIA and its partners well, but, as you can see once we apply antialiasing and anisotropic filtering, the relative failings of the Ti 4800SE become all too apparent.
  • MSI GeForce FX 5600 Review - VR-Zone Hardware has posted a review on the MSI GeForce FX 5600. From a default core clock speed of 325Mhz and a memory frequency of 550Mhz, we were able to reach a core speed of 369Mhz and a memory frequency of 686Mhz using Nvidia's hidden overclocking tool included with the 43.45 Detonator's.
  • NVIDIA GeForce FX5900 Ultra review - The NV35 seeks to better the NV30 in almost every way. Having a high GPU output only makes sense with oodles of bandwidth, especially when one knows that antialiasing and anisotropic filtering are what most users look for in a high-end card. The NV35 tries to solve the bandwidth problem by running a 256-bit memory interface (4 x 64-bit controllers) coupled to 850MHz RAM. A total, theoretical 27.2GB/s of bandwidth should serve the 450MHz core well.
  • Nvidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra Preview - Adrenaline Vault has posted an extensive preview (15pages) of Nvidia's upcoming flagship graphics processor NV35.
  • MSI FX5200-TDR128 Review - Viper's Lair has posted a review of MSI FX5200-TDR128 video card.
  • SuSE Linux 8.2 - While SuSE does not provide easily install-able ISO images for download, their 8.2 directory has been uploaded to provide a method to install SuSE's Professional Edition directly from FTP servers. First, get the installation image: boot.iso (20MB), then boot from it and follow the instructions provided in this readme file: "Boot from CD and at the boot prompt, enter the installation source: linux install=ftp://ftp_server/directory.
