- Al-Jazeera Sites Hit With Denial-of-Service Attacks - The Arab
satellite television network
Al-Jazeera suffered a second day of sustained distributed denial-of-service
(DDOS) attacks against its English- and Arabic-language Web sites on
Wednesday. The attacks have pushed the network, which is based in Doha, Qatar,
off the Web for the time being and forced Al-Jazeera to increase bandwidth for
the sites and step up security in a desperate effort to get back online.
- TextMaker Office Suite for Linux Unveiled - Consumers and small
businesses seeking a desktop word processing program that looks and works much
like Microsoft's Word but costs only a fraction as much can take a peek at the
beta 2 version of
TextMaker for Linux. The software, which runs on the open-source Linux
operating system, is available through May 31 as a free beta download on the
Web site of its developer, SoftMaker Software. TextMaker for Linux will start
shipping worldwide on June 1 for about $50, Kotulla said. Users can purchase
the product directly from the company's Web site.
- Game Boy's new look - What other offerings are included in this
pocket-sized device with a sticker price of approximately $100? Shoe

- Multiplayer game trial using GPRS connection -
The Java
Games developer, Macrospace is running
a free
global trial of its new CannonsME wireless Java game. The game allows up
to 4 players to play an arcade classic against each other over today's GPRS
networks. The trial is focused on Nokia Series 40 and 3G handsets (5100, 6100,
6610, 6650, 7210, 7250) and the Nokia 3510i. But versions for generic Java
devices (e.g. the Motorola T720) and the Sharp GX10 are also available.

- Siemens SX1, M56, SL56 coming to the U.S. -
The
tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz SX1, Siemens' first Series 60 phone, sports
a rather unusual design where the device has strips of keys built into each
side of the phone rather than an ordinary keypad. Sporting a 16-bit color
display, the SX1's embedded software includes a full PIM suite, support for
SMS, MMS and e-mail (POP3/IMAP4/SMTP) messaging, as well as camcorder and
picture management applications to handle the input from the built-in digital
camera. Also on the feature list: Bluetooth, GPRS, J2ME, WAP 2.0 and desktop
synchronization.
- Lower energy power management for cell phones -
The
AT73C202 features a low-voltage 1.8V/300mA high-efficiency DC-to-DC
converter, a set of 7X Low Drop Out Voltage Regulators, a Battery Charger, a
2.8V/1.8V SIM level shifter interface, a backup battery charger-regulator and
also all the circuitry that enables the DC-to-DC converter soft start, reset
generation, power supply sequencing, temperature and voltage supervision and
other features. The sleep and low-power modes have been optimized in order to
achieve extremely low current consumption (15uA max).
- New cheap cameras for cellphones - Agilent Technologies has
announced
a new
family of fully integrated CMOS camera modules that can be easily designed
into mobile phones. Because they are fully integrated and require no external
components, the new modules reduce time to market for handset and PDA
designers. Agilent's new camera modules combine high image quality CIF or VGA
resolution CMOS image sensors with a tightly integrated image processor, an
embedded power supply and high-quality lens to offer a complete imaging
solution.
- Cirrus Logic to enable low-end DVD players with DivX - Cirrus Logic
Inc. has licensed the DivX video codec from DivX Networks (San Diego,
California) for both its high end and single-board DVD processor families. The
deal would usher in the
first sub-$149 DVD players that support DivX-enabled content by late 2003.
