  • Hacker busted - Federal authorities yesterday accused a British computer administrator of hacking into 92 computer networks operated by the U.S. military and NASA, including one break-in that shut down systems at a navy facility in New Jersey immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Authorities said two of the computer systems were at the Pentagon. The intrusions also made inoperable the network that serves the military district for Washington, officials said. [Reuters]
  • Potter Pirates Fail to Copy Film on the Internet - Computer geeks have apparently tried and failed to use their technical wizardry to copy a pirated version of Warner Bros. newest "Harry Potter" movie to the Internet before its Friday theatrical release.  Warner Bros., a unit of AOL Time Warner AOL.N , said on Tuesday that it had opened a copy of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" that it discovered in a hard-to-find location on the Internet and found it to be an empty decoy.
  • Drug-resistant bacteria discovered in Detroit  - A 40-year-old Detroit area woman had endured painfully infected foot sores for more than a year. Doctors gave her numerous antibiotics, but nothing worked. Finally, last April, they amputated one of her toes -- and made a frightening discovery. Her sores were infected with a virulent new strain of the bacterium staphylococcus aureus, or staph aureus. By stealing genetic material from another bug, the new strain became totally resistant to vancomycin, the longtime drug of last defense against it. Health officials would not identify the metro Detroit woman or what hospital treated her.
  • Nokia: BlackBerry phone ripe by 2003 - The first Nokia phone to feature BlackBerry maker Research In Motion's e-mail software will be launched in the United States by the end of 2003, Nokia said Tuesday. The $250 Nokia 6800 is aimed at business workers used to getting e-mails on BlackBerry devices and includes a keyboard that emerges when the clamshell-shaped phone is unfolded, said Nokia business applications product manager Brannon Perkison. Nokia licensed the RIM software earlier this month.

  • Athlon XP Price Drop  - According to other sources, AMD cut prices for the Athlon XP 2200+, 2100+, 2000+, 1900+, 1800+ and 1700+ processors. The Athlon XP 2200+ was said to be still priced at over US$100, while the prices of the other five processors fell by as much as about 40% to US$60-90. Prices of the high-end Athlon XP 2400+, 2600+, 2700+ and 2800+ remained unchanged.
  • Intel breaks 3GHz speed barrier - It may be a year before the 3GHz chip, expected this week, and its hyperthreading feature catch on among business buyers, but gamers and affluent consumers will have them both on hand for the holidays. PC makers such as Dell Computer will offer the 3GHz chip in their performance-oriented desktop models, which sell for $2,000 and above.
  • AMD ships mobile 2200+ - AMD yesterday launched the mobile Athlon XP 2200+, and in a pleasant change from recent 'launches', actually has parts in stock to ship. Fujitsu Siemens, AMD's biggest customer in Europe, is fitting in the 2200+ into the AMILO A-x600 series and it has stock available now.
  • Future Look: OpenGL 2.0 -  Currently available as version 1.4, OpenGL has proven to adapt with the evolution of graphics hardware, though it's age is becoming starkly apparent as compared to Microsoft's latest DirectX D3D technology. In hopes of revitalizing the decade old standard, 3Dlabs recently offers a new approach outlining the features of a possible OpenGL 2.0 revision.
