- Wi-Fi users warned of pirates - AT&T Broadband tells customers to secure
their Wi-Fi networks after someone used a subscriber's access to dispatch a pirated
movie over the Web.
- UF turns a corner in developing small surveillance planes - Intuition
and artistry have helped Ifju and his students turn science fiction into science fact in
developing the small airplanes - called micro-aerial
vehicles, or MAVs. The smallest, about 5 inches in diameter, set a record in April for
surveying a target 2,000 feet from the launch site at the International Micro Air Vehicle
Competition.
- When Dreamcasts attack - Cyberpunks will be toting cheap game consoles
on their utility belts this fall if they follow the lead of a pair of white hat hackers
who demonstrated Wednesday how to turn the defunct Sega Dreamcast into a disposable attack box
designed to be dropped like a bug on corporate networks during covert black bag jobs.
- The blue period of lasers - Blu-ray owes its name from the color of the
405 nanometer used laser (Blue/Violet) to read and write data on the Blu-ray Discs (BD). Blu-ray can contain
27GB, which can be read at 36MB/s on single speed.
- AMD will produce 333MHz front side bus - Despite Denials from AMD a few
months ago that it
would produce Athlon XPs using a 333MHz front side bus, it appears the company will,
in fact, do so. A report on AMD MB yesterday suggested that AMD had done an about turn and we now
have confirmation from one of the firm's partners that this report is substantially
correct.
- Ti 4200 Round-Up - If price isn't that big of a concern, features
should be. The Chaintech, MSI, and the Leadtek cards have good bundles, and the Gainward
sacrifices a little bit in order to have better overclocking. If you are looking for a
card that overclocks well, Gainward won't let you down, and this version has 128MB as
well. Also the MSI and Abit cards should be considered for overclocking as well. Read more...
- Complete Innovatek Water Cooling Kit Video Review - The Complete Innovatek Water Cooling Kit makes setting up a H20 rig
both fast and simple. With all quality parts this kit delivers on both price and
performance. If you are in the market for a H20 kit keep this one at the very top of your
list.
- ATI RADEON 9000 PRO Review - With ATI's unique positioning in the value
space with RADOEN 9000 PRO, what does it compete with? Officially, the answer is
NVIDIA's GeForce4 MX series. The MSRP of the RADEON 9000 PRO matches up very closely with
GeForce4 MX 440, while the RADEON 9000's equivalent would be the GeForce4 MX 420. But in
the real world, things are much more complicated than that. NVIDIA has two GeForce4 Ti
4200 variants with street prices that are very competitive with RADEON 9000 PRO. And if
that wasn't enough, making things even more complicated are RADEON 8500 and RADEON 8500LE
cards manufactured by ATI and its partners that are also selling within a handful of
dollars of the RADEON 9000 PRO.
- Thermaltake Smart Fan 2 Review - No! This is not just another
fan! This is a
SMART fan! I don't know of any company that makes a fan quite like this one. This fan
has the ability to change it's speed on-the-fly, which means, (if the mode is
selected) if your case temp (or wherever you attach the thermal probe to) increases, this
fan will pick up it's speed and keep the case cool. Also, if the case is nice and cool,
the fan will slow a little, to give your ears a rest. While this is only one of the three
functions offered with this puppy, I think that it's the most useful.
- List of Bugs Fixed in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 - This
article provides a list of the bugs that were fixed in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3
(SP3). Service packs are cumulative. This means that the bugs that are fixed in a service
pack are also fixed in later service packs. For example, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3
contains all of the fixes that are included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and
Service Pack 2 (SP2). You do not need to install an earlier service pack before you
install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
- DOOM III is up and running on the latest version of OS X - id
Software's Graeme Devine has updated his .plan with word on the next Macintosh Quake III Arena patch, as well
as word that DOOM III is up and running on the latest version of OS X: "We will
be releasing the Macintosh Quake 3 client hand in hand with the Win32 / Linux clients.
We'll also require Mac OS X 10.1 or later for this release. DOOM is up and running under
10.2, which as an OS is really quite cool (speed is much better than 10.1, although
resizing a browser window is still painful)."
