  • Violent games good for kids - A group of academics are urging a US appeals court to strike down a law restricting children's access to violent video games. The 33 scholars, from institutions including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of London, said the law is misguided. "Most studies and experiments on video games containing violent content have not found adverse effects," a brief lodged with the court said.
  • Scientists Grow Teeth in Lab - The scientists, based at the Forsyth Institute in Boston, reportedly are the first to coax such a complex tooth structure from a collection of individual cells. "This is very exciting, and I don't think it's expected," said R. Bruce Donoff, dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. The Forsyth scientists already have grown batches of very small tooth crowns, and hope the new technique could be used to grow larger, more complete teeth.  Researchers said it would be at least a decade before the technique could be used to help patients.
  • Venus may have bugs, say scientists - Scientists in the United States say clouds high in the atmosphere of the planet Venus contain chemicals that may suggest the presence of life. Space probes have never found any sign of life on Venus, which has an extremely hot surface and an atmosphere that contains a mixture of poisonous chemicals.  But Dirk Schulze-Makuch and Louis Irwin, from the University of Texas, say the Venusian atmosphere is "relatively hospitable" and may be home to large numbers of bacteria.
  • Former Nine Inch Nails Member Talks Britney Ringtones - Chris Vrenna was a founding member of gothic industrial band Nine Inch Nails, but you'll never believe what he has on his cellphone's ringtone -- Britney Spears. According to Vrenna, a self-described "gadget whore," the Britney song is "awesome" because his phone's technology allows the ringtone to have drums and bass so it sounds more like Muzak than a monotone beep.
  • China implicated in Dalai Lama hack plot - China has repeatedly attempted to crack into the Dalai Lama's computer network, according to its administrators. Over the last month there have been repeated attempts to infect systems used by the exiled spiritual leader with a computer virus which attempts to send information back to China, Jigme Tsering, manager of the Tibetan Computer Resource Centre told AP
  • Real-Time Testing of Internet Filtering in China - This system is intended for use only to determine whether China is blocking to one or a few specified sites. Those who wish to test a large number of sites should contact Ben Edelman (email) for details.
  • xDSL overtakes cable in Europe - DSL has overtaken cable as the most popular broadband technology in Europe, according to the latest research from Forrester. Comparing the two technologies, it found that 56 per cent of broadband connections in Europe were based on xDSL, with cable making up the rest. The reserach did not compare other broadband technologies such as satellite or wireless.
  • Lightning Rods for Nanoelectronics - On a dry winter day, walking on a new carpet can generate a whopping 35,000-volt discharge. We are not harmed by this high voltage, because the amount of charge that flows is puny. Still, it is large enough to destroy sensitive micro-electronic components. Researchers have come up with clever ways to prevent such damage. But as circuits get smaller, they become more sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and the old tricks no longer work. Can we continue to find new ways to prevent electrostatic damage and thereby maintain the pace of innovation?
  • The connect-to-everything Nokia 6650 - The 6650 is a tri-band phone, supporting GSM 900/1800 and WCDMA networks. That gives it support for up to 128 kbps transmission, and using WCDMA the phone is able to transmit both voice and data simultaneously. The 6650 also includes a 640x480 still camera that is also capable of capturing up to 20 seconds of video, complete with audio. Pictures and videos can be displayed on the device's 12-bit color display, or transmitted to other users using MMS. For data transfer, the 6650 supports GPRS, WCDMA, Infrared, Bluetooth, and USB. That connection allows for the WAP 1.2.1 browser. The phone also supports MIDP Java 1.0, polyphonic ring tones, and e-wallet functions. It can synchronize with a PC, where the user can also view and edit recorded multimedia content from the camera, and even set up playlists on the device. It packs 7 MB of user-available RAM. And Nokia has managed to fit all of that into 141 grams. (Reuters).
  • Can a PC run more than 30 operating systems? - There are many points of view on exactly what an operating system is. I have concluded that I have approximately 39 separate, fully functional operating systems on my machine (as well as two that are sick at the moment). If you count my 18 DOS window managers, I have a total of 57 operating systems on my PC.
  • Microsoft Ponders Windows Upgrade for '04 - Another developer with Redmond ties said signs are pointing toward a Windows release that would hit during Microsoft's fiscal 2004 (July 1, 2003, to June 30, 2004).  Originally it was supposed to be Longhorn, said the developer, who asked not to be identified. It will likely be an XP update to ship with the .Net Framework, more managed code used in Windows, and extensive updates to Windows Media technologies. I don't know what they're going to call it though.
  • Microsoft FrontPage Flaw Found - Microsoft warned Web site administrators on Wednesday that a flaw in its FrontPage extensions could allow an attacker to take control of their servers or cause the computers to seize up. In its 53rd advisory for the year, the software giant said a vulnerability in the SmartHTML interpreter could be exploited to cause a denial-of-service attack on the Web server if the computer had FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 running.

Featuring AMD PowerNow! technology, the new AMD mobile processors give businesses and home consumers a genuine mobile solution which can significantly extend battery life to enable anytime, anywhere productivity.
  • ABIT Siluro GF4 Ti4200 OTES Review - When ATI released the fully DirectX 8.1-compliant RADEON 9000 Pro, NVIDIA's GeForce4 MX line was instantly relegated to the bargain bin. Who needs a rehashed piece of DirectX 7 hardware when a faster, more modern card can be had for a few dollars more? NVIDIA was quick to remind mainstream gamers that the GeForce4 Ti 4200 easily outperformed the RADEON 9000 Pro at a marginal price difference. Since then, prices on the 9000 Pro have fallen, making the card an exceptional value for well under $100.
  • Prolink GF4 MX440-8X - Today nVidia announced the latest addition to their budget graphics chipset line, the GeForce4 MX440-8X with full AGP 8x support and other improvements to help speed boast the GPU. TweakTown checks out Prolink's GeForce4 MX440-8X graphics card and tells us what type of performance the extra bandwidth given by the AGP8x bus provides for gamers.
  • MSI MX440-VTD8X 64MB  - The first card featuring NVIDIA's latest NV18 core which is AGP 8X compliant. Based on the same architecture as the previous GeForce4 MX 440 GPU, there's more to this card than just an increased AGP transfer rate.
