Ledger CTO Warns: Multisig Isn't Always the Answer

After a recent Coldcard security incident, many Bitcoin users rushed toward multisig setups. Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet issued a clear caution: multisig is not automatically safer. While adding multiple keys reduces the risk of a single point of failure, it also introduces complexity that can make recovery difficult or even impossible if done poorly. Complexity is frequently where people lose funds.
Guillemet pointed to Miniscript as a powerful alternative. Ledger offers one of the most complete hardware implementations of Bitcoin Miniscript, allowing advanced spending policies such as inheritance plans, recovery keys with timelocks, and flexible multisig rules while still showing exactly what is being signed on the device screen. This “clear signing” approach helps prevent accidental approvals of the wrong transaction.
Ledger also supports MuSig2, a cryptographic form of multisignature. Multiple devices can aggregate their keys into a single Schnorr public key and produce one signature. On-chain, the transaction looks identical to a normal single-signature spend, which improves privacy and lowers fees. According to Guillemet, Ledger devices are currently the only hardware wallets offering MuSig2 support.
The core message is straightforward: choose multisig or Miniscript only when your actual threat model requires it, not because of fear from a headline. For most people, a well-backed-up single-signature hardware wallet with clear signing remains the most practical and least error-prone solution.
Summary / Opinion on Multisig
Multisig remains a valuable tool for higher-security setups, joint accounts, or inheritance planning. However, it is easy to over-engineer. Poorly designed multisig configurations have locked people out of their own Bitcoin more often than simple hardware failures have. Miniscript and MuSig2 give users more elegant and private options than traditional script-based multisig. The best approach is still to match the security model to the real risks rather than adding complexity for its own sake.
