- Bush Promises 'Aggressive' Expansion of Broadband - President Bush told
high-tech executives on Thursday that federal regulators would take steps to expand high-speed Internet access but offered few details about the
administration's plans.
- Computer Photo File Virus Discovered - Security researchers have found
the first computer virus able to corrupt digital images, including photos, stored on a
hard-drive in the popular ".jpg" format, an anti-virus company said on Thursday.
The virus, dubbed "W32/Perrun," can corrupt .jpg files but
is considered low risk because it has not spread, and was not expected to spread, across
the Internet, said Vincent Gullotto, vice president of Network Associates Inc.'s NET.N
Anti-Virus Response Team.
- Microsoft Discloses Software Flaw - Microsoft Corp. acknowledged a serious flaw Wednesday in its Internet server software that could
allow sophisticated hackers to seize control of Web sites, steal information and use
vulnerable computers to attack others online.
- Pentagon: Prying Eyes Can't See Sensitive Videos - The Pentagon said
Thursday that it routinely transmits unencrypted video images via commercial satellites but it was confident that NATO forces were
never harmed by anyone picking up unclassified data feeds.
- Could bionic eye end blindness? - The Dobelle Institute is among
several institutions trying in essence to create a new cornea through technology. The
cornea allows light into the interior of the eye. Dobelle is using a digital video
camera mounted on glasses to capture an image and send it to a small computer on the
patient's belt: The images are processed and sent to electrodes implanted in the patient's
visual cortex. The electrodes stimulate the brain, producing a pattern of bright spots
that form an image.
- Astronomers hail planetary discovery - Astronomers have discovered a planetary system around another star that is similar in scale to our
Solar System.
- NVIDIA Cg Compiler and Cg Language - NVIDIA today announced that the
graphics community-including industry luminaries, game developers, middleware vendors,
digital content creation (DCC) software vendors and rendering vendors-are overwhelmingly
endorsing and adopting
the Cg Language and the NVIDIA Cg Toolkit, unveiled earlier today (PR1 / PR2).
Industry-leading DCC tool providers, including: Alias|Wavefront, Discreet, Luxology and
Softimage, are actively working with NVIDIA to incorporate Cg into their current
development plans. The first Cg-based offerings-primarily expected to be software
plug-ins-will be available to DCC customers this summer directly within their favorite
tools.
