Google has quietly slashed free storage for new accounts to just 5GB by default. To unlock the full 15GB across Gmail, Drive, and Photos, users now must link and verify a phone number.

Privacy-focused rival MEGA is pushing back, offering 20GB of end-to-end encrypted storage for free—no phone number needed. The change, which rolled out in March 2026, has sparked fresh debate over data privacy versus convenience.
