GameCritics on Geriatric Gaming - briefly
(hx) 05:17 PM CET - Nov,23 2003 - Post a comment
The chaps over at GameCritics have published an article discussing how a person's videogame experiences change as they get older. Talking with gamers as old as 30, they ask if reflexes are dulled, consider shifts in preferred genres and discuss how gaming affects their relationships (Ed.note: my wife is a gamer herself, so that goes a long way in terms of games not becoming a real issue) (thanks Slashdot.org
Q: Now getting back to the questions, have any of you noticed shifts in your preferred genres between now and your younger days?

Brad: Oh yeah, definitely. Back when I was in Junior High and High School, I basically had infinite time on my hands, especially during summer. At that point, I was really into RPGs and would really try and tear them apart.

You know, find every secret and do all the sidequests. Now that I'm older, I really don't have the time to play long, drawn-out games anymore. The majority of them are filled to the brim with busywork that's designed to take as long as humanly possible, and 40 to 60 hours is too much of a commitment to make between work and family unless it's really outstanding. Final Fantasy X and Shadow Hearts are recent titles where I felt that the time invested was well worth it, but on the whole I limit myself to two or three RPGs a year. On the other hand, my love of short games has really skyrocketed, with 20 hours being the upper limit of what I'll usually tolerate. Oh, and anything that lets you save at any time also gets major points with me.
