  • 800-Mile-Wide "Object" Found in Solar System - Astronomers announced today the discovery of the largest object in the solar system since Pluto was named the ninth planet in 1930. The object is half the size of Pluto, composed primarily of rock and ice, and circles the sun once every 288 years.
  • Chess Champion Kramnik Beats 'Deep Fritz' Computer -  World human chess champion Vladimir Kramnik took the lead on Sunday over Deep Fritz, the latest computer star, by winning the second game in a match billed as the "Brains of Bahrain" contest.  Kramnik, playing white, exposed flaws in Deep Fritz's technique with a win in 57 moves. Kramnick now leads the eight-game competition 1.5-0.5 after drawing the opening game on Friday.  Kramnik, a 27-year-old Russian, will get $1 million if he wins, $800,000 if the match is drawn, and $600,000 if he loses. German-developed Deep Fritz is capable of evaluating 3.5 million moves per second, but once again it was unable break through Kramnik's rock-solid shield.
  • Palm launches $99 PDA - At the low-end, Palm currently offers the m105 model which is typically discounted to $99, but this is more full featured than the Zire. The m105 has a greyscale screen to the Zire's mono display, 8MB of memory instead of the 2MB; and takes standard AAA batteries rather than the Zire's built-in rechargeable battery. Neither model is expandable.
  • Sony folds all-in-one PC into U.S. lineup - The desktop will include a 1.6GHz Intel Celeron chip manufactured specifically for the new PC, along with 512MB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive and a combination CD-rewritable/DVD-ROM drive. It also includes IEEE 1394 ports for connecting digital cameras and other multimedia devices, as well as slots for Sony's Memory Stick data cards.  The new Vaio will sell for about $1,600, Sony said, close to its price in Japan.
  • Intel enters DDR-333 arena with new PC chip sets - Intel  today announced four new chip sets for desktop PCs - a move that represents the company's entry into the DDR-333 memory arena. The chip sets from Intel include the 850E, 845GE, 845PE and 845GV. All devices support the company's Hyper-Threading (HT) Technology, which enables software programs to run a single microprocessor as though there are two processors in place.
  • Micron Demonstrates Multiple DDR/DDR-II Platforms - Micron Technology, Inc., today announced it is demonstrating multiple internally-developed DDR platforms, including DDR-II, DDR400, and DDR333 systems, at the VIA Technical Forum (VTF).
  • ATI speeds up memory chips - The new ATI version, dubbed GDDR3, promises to be substantially faster, capable of handling data at speeds up to 800MHz, compared with the limit of 400MHz for current DDR. The new memory format is intended for use on graphics cards, the circuit boards that connect a graphics processor to a PC and typically contain up to 128MB of dedicated memory.
