- Mobo makers give details on Intel price cuts - Taiwanese motherboard
makers shed additional light on Intel's reported decision to move up price cuts on some
Pentium 4 processors to September 1 from the originally scheduled October 27. On
July 23, the Wall Street Journal and CNET had reported Salomon Smith Barney analyst
Jonathan Joseph as saying that Intel would cut the price of its top-end 2.53GHz P4 processor by 63% and the price
of its 1.8GHz P4 by 13%.
- Ottawa man convicted for selling PlayStation 'mod chips' - An Ottawa
man who sold chips that allowed Sony PlayStation units to play pirated games was
fined $17,000 and sentenced to a year of probation last week. Robert Garby, 38,
pleaded guilty to two counts of copyright infringement and four counts of selling
unauthorized computer equipment. He was charged after an RCMP investigation found he was
selling a line of 413 pirated video games and charging $30 to install "mod
chips" in Sony PlayStation video game consoles.
- Motorola to use gaming LAN as 2.4-GHz entry - Motorola Inc.'s
Semiconductor Products Sector will use a proprietary frequency-hopping scheme developed for multiuser
gaming as its indirect entry into 2.4-GHz wireless markets, corporate vice president
Ray Burgess told the Smart Networks Developer Forum Tuesday.
- WebTV 911 exploit causes confusion - A flaw in Microsoft's
WebTV units might allow malicious hackers to force the unit's modem into dialling the
emergency services, at least according to US reports. An ABC news report suggests an email virus is spreading which can shut a
WebTV (or in its rebranded form, MSNTV) unit down, reboot it and call 911. Several people
have had police turn up at their door after clicking on an infected attachment, it
reports.

- Infineon Announces New HDD IC For 1.6Gbyte Transfer Rates - Infineon
Technologies today announced that it is sampling the industry's first hard-disk drive
read-channel integrated circuit (IC) implemented in 0.13-micron process technology.
Designed to achieve data transfer rates
on a disk drive of 1.6 GB/s under worst case conditions, the new read channels will
help drive manufacturers keep pace with market demand for faster high-density drives used
in enterprise data storage systems. Infineon will release general engineering samples of
the 0.13-micron read channel to qualified customers in the fall of this year, and plans to
ramp production to support disk drive designs reaching market in the first half of 2003.
