- Chip performance could be doubled thanks to new breakthrough - The
Oxford researchers, working for Automatic Parallel Designs, claim they
can achieve this while utilising less die area and also say better power efficiency
would result through using the new findings to re-design math circuitry (about 50% more
energy efficiency than 0.13 micron technology according to the researchers). AutoPD also
claim to be working with a major CPU manufacturer on a new floating point multiplier and
the findings could influence chip makers in many areas including processor and DSP
technology. The algorithms are also being considered by at least two other processor
makers according to recent reports.
- Team demos "first quantum crypto prototype machine" - Boffins
have moved one step
closer to a practical implementation of the Holy Grail of encryption - quantum
cryptography - by exchanging keys across a 67km fibre optic network.
- Dell's first desktop CPU-based notebook on market in August - Dell
Computer's first desktop CPU-based notebook is expected to appear on market
shelves in early August. The new product line includes two models, the SmartStep 200N and
250N, which respectively run on Intel's 2GHz and 2.2GHz Pentium 4 processors.
- Radeon 9700 Tomorrow - The Markham, Ontario-based company on Thursday
will unveil
the details of the Radeon 9700, a desktop graphics chip based on a new architecture
that will provide greater realism when it comes to 3D images, according to sources.
- Mac GeForce Ti Upgrade - NVIDIA announced that Apple is now offering PowerMac owners the chance to
upgrade to the GeForce4 Ti.

- Microsoft admits Win XP DirectX problems on AMD platforms - Some DirectX 8.1 programs
may simply stop working on AMD PCs, says the Vole, and it has come up with a patch to
fix the problem. The problem applies to DirectX programs running under Windows XP on AMD
platforms. Intel processors are unaffected, the posting on Microsoft's support site here (patch) says.

has released brand new drivers and applications for the Sound Blaster Live! cards. The package (50MB) includes new Audio HQ, Surround Mixer,
PlayCenter 3 (version 3.02.52), Recorder (version 2.00.31), MiniDisc Center (version
1.01.15), Remote Center (version 1.40.26). You can download smaller one (25MB) that includes only drivers and suroundmixer.
According to Creative, the new drivers resolve compatibility issues with Sound Blaster
Live! products on Windows XP.
