  • In New York, Ethernet goes electric - Energy company Con Edison is diversifying its networks, making Ethernet services available through the city's electrical conduits. But analysts say the market may be tough to crack.
  • Anti-snooping operating system close to launch - Computer activists in Britain are close to completing an operating system that could undermine government efforts to the wiretap the internet. The UK Home Office has condemned the project as potentially providing a new tool for criminals.
  • AMD cuts prices to match Intel - AMD dropped its top three desktop Athlon XP chips by as much as one-third, for example. The 2100+ chip moved from $330 to $224, a 32 percent reduction, while the 2000+ went from $280 to $193, a 31 percent cut, and the 1900+ was reduced 22 percent, from $220 to $172. The company is expected to introduce a new Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8GHz desktop chip early next month, followed by a new mobile Athlon XP 1800+.
  • Pentium 4 2.53GHz Processor Test - X-Bit Labs tested the today's fastest Pentium 4 processor supporting 2.53GHz core clock frequency and the new 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus. Our tests showed that this CPU is the today's fastest desktop solution, which has beaten its eternal rival, AMD Athlon XP.
  • MSI G4Ti4600-VTD GeForce 4 Ti4600 - Based on nVidia's GF4Ti4600 chip we already know that the G4Ti4600-VTD is going to be damn fast, but how does MSI separate itself from the rest? The MSI's claim to fame has always been their value, and for as little as $500 CDN ($325 US) you can pick up a MSI G4Ti4600-VTD and all the GeForce 4 Ti4600 goodness it comes with. As with many other manufacturer's, MSI has chosen to use nVidia's reference design.
  • Zoetrope = Savage XP - X-bit Labs has posted a new info on what VIA/S3 Graphics is preparing in their graphics plans. Firstly, the official name for Zoetrope will be SavageXP, another name, which allegedly doesn't have anything to do with Windows XP.  Secondly, the chip will be equipped with 64MB or 128MB DDR SDRAM with 5.7GB/sec bandwidth. This is very little, because it corresponds to 350MHz (175MHz DDR) frequency only.
Thirdly, the performance of Savage XP is supposed to be close to that of NVIDIA GeForc4 MX420, according to some preliminary data. Fourthly, they report that the price of Savage XP will make only $15 per piece, which positions this chip as a Low-End and very Low-End solution (for your reference: SiS Xabre400 costs around $30).
  • KaZaA Media Desktop v1.7.1 - KaZaA Media Desktop is a peer-to-peer file sharing application. You can search, download, organize and play media files. It has a search engine that lets you search by categories, artist, etc. Files are downloaded from several sources simultaneously, and resumed if broken.
  • PowerStrip 3.18 Beta Build 284 - PowerStrip 3.18 provides advanced, multi-monitor, programmable hardware support to a wide range of graphics cards - from the venerable Matrox Millennium I to the latest Radeon 8500DV and GeForce4 Ti4600.
  • Streamripper 1.51 - Winamp Plugin - Streaming audio broadcasts give Internet radio fans endless selections of content. There's probably a streaming station out there to fit every interest. Listening to an audio stream once can be rewarding. Recording the broadcast can be a lot cooler. Use Streamripper as a Winamp plug-in or run it from the command line to record MP3s from streaming servers.
  • Adaware 5.82 - Ad-aware identifies and removes these surreptitiously installed applications - Spywares, adwares and trackwares. Using updateable "reflists," which are sort of like antivirus DAT files, Ad-aware scours your system--including registry and temporary Internet files--and looks for traces of recognized adware modules.
  • Tweak-XP v1.33Tweak-XP bundles more than 22 different utilities in one: it was developed to combine both tweaking and optimizing features to increase the speed of your Windowsr XP system. All settings can be done without having any former knowledge, since Tweak-XP informs the user in detail about each option.
  • Fantom CD v1.2.0 Build 1730  - Fantom CD is a program for reading CDs and running CD programs without a CD by creating a virtual CD-ROM drive on the hard disk using software methods. This emulator allows you to run CD-ROM applications from your hard drive or network server.
  • Elsa Detonator 28.84  - ELSA released new detonators (Win2K/XP) for their cards.
