  • MP3 Files Not Always Safe With Top Media Players - A quirk in media players from Microsoft and RealNetworks could enable attackers to hijack Web browsers and run scripts on the computers of some MP3 music fans.
  • Sun charges for Star Office - Sun Microsystems is to charge for Linux and Windows versions of the StarOffice suite with the launch of the next version of the office productivity suite in May. According to Hesse Online, only a Solaris version of StarOffice 6.0 will remain freely distributed after the upgrade, and Windows and Linux versions will attract a license fee.
  • Faster Rambus DRAM to take on rivals - With one eye on competing SDRAM makers, Rambus gets ready to show off speedier DRAM technology at the Intel Developer Forum. The RIMM4200 update moves data quicker.
  • IBM 110GHz transistors rev chips - Big Blue's Semiconductor Division says its so-called 210GHz transistors are ready to roll on network chips. They will eventually be able to run at speeds of 110GHz or faster.
  • Silicon nanoparticles enable microscopic lasers - Researchers at the University of Illinois have produced fluorescent nanoparticles from silicon wafers and believe the materials could lead to microscopic lasers that would replace wire interconnects on future circuits.
  • HP unveils 8-way Unix server - The rp7410 is configured with up to eight PA-8700 650 or 750MHz processors and runs the HP-UX11I (Unix) operating system.  HP has submitted a SPECjbb2000 result of 84,000 Java operations per second, which it claims outperforms IBM's eight-way -P660-6M1 and Sun Microsystems' 12-way 6800 Unix servers.
  • GeForce 4 & Pentium 3 benchmarks -  For those gamers who still have an older Pentium 3, FiringSquad have taken a look at the GeForce4 with older Pentium III-equipped systems at 700MHz and 1GHz. Seems the x-box can also not play music that has bin copied to a cd-r also. Least the demo unit at work cannot play any copied music cd. Wargy http://www.the-group.org
