  • $1 films spook Hollywood - A Taiwanese Web site is offering hundreds of videos on demand for just $1 each, trumping Hollywood's plans to deliver similar services and raising the specter of a new round of international copyright battles. Despite claims that their Movie88 site is following all local copyright laws, the owners of this new venture are drawing scrutiny from a skeptical Hollywood. Meanwhile, Web surfers drawn by free or cut-rate movies are flocking to the site, overloading servers and clogging data pipes.

  • New Twist On Web-Forms Hack Scarfs Browser Cookies -  An independent network security researcher has uncovered a new way to steal the secret browser "cookies" of Web surfers with the help of Internet servers that were never intended to communicate with browser software. In a demonstration of the exploit, which Obscure calls the Extended HTML Form Attack, a POP3 (post office protocol) e-mail server at Ebay was used to divulge the browser cookies of users who had visited the auction giant's Web site.
  • Teen Anarchist's Supporters Accuse FBI Of AIM Hack - The FBI declined to comment Wednesday on allegations that federal agents have commandeered online chat accounts belonging to the teen-aged operator of anti-government site Raisethefist.com. However, the agency denies allegations that it has harassed associates of 18-year-old self-proclaimed anarchist Sherman Martin Austin. According to several of Austin's supporters, someone has repeatedly logged into the teen's accounts on America Online's AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) real-time chat service while he was in police custody.
  • How to hack unbreakable Oracle servers - Security researcher David Litchfield has identified a vast number of attacks against Oracle application servers and has written them up in a paper which includes defensive strategies as well. From this we learn, contrary to Oracle President Larry Ellison's claims, that Oracle is vulnerable to buffer overflow attacks, DoS attacks, and remote exploitation to name but a few difficulties.
  • NY sues NAI so you can say McAfee sucks - The State of New York has filed suit against Network Associates over outrageous EULA terms forbidding users and journalists to speak ill of the company's McAfee anti-virus product, Reuters reports. NAI has the nerve to require the company's consent before anyone can publish reviews of its products or disclosing with any third party the results of benchmarks comparing NAI products against the competition, the wire service says.

Marketed under the name REALmagic XcardT, Sigma's newest MPEG-4 offering turns a PC into a home theatre solution, providing TV playback of top entertainment content from DivX Networks, DVDs and new Internet Streaming Media Alliance (ISMA) compliant video streams. Sigma's REALmagic Xcard will retail for $99.95 and will be available initially from the company's REALmagic Online store at www.buyrealmagic.com starting March 2002.
