EA Blacklisting Battlefield 2 Servers? - briefly
(hx) 10:26 PM CEST - Jun,14 2005 - Post a comment / read (2)
There's word on the EAGames UK forums that Battlefield 2 Demo servers which were edited to remove the 12-minute round limit, or allow the use of previously-locked weapons, have been banned from the EA master server list, resulting in them not being listed in the in-game browser: (thanks BFNation.net)
Servers running with the modified python files are disappearing from the server list. Truth be told, I was running one of the servers that disappeared. Apparently the only other people I can find that have suffered the same fate are those that disabled the end-of-round due to the time running out. I have since re-enabled the time limit and was forced to switch the server to a new IP to get it listed in the in-game server browser again. If it's something that EA is frowning on and as such removing them, it would be a good thing to put up in the forums. If it's some other type of technical glitch where these servers are just dropping off the in-game browser, that's a different story alltogether.
I run 2 64-player demo servers and 1 32-player private server since the demo came out. Both have been full 24/7 since demo release. I was only running no time limit mod and my server name indicated that, ie xyz No Time Limit. Both of the 64-player servers were delisted today. I changed the IP address and name to xyz Unlocked. Both servers filled up to max capacity within minutes. About 20 minutes later, both disappeared from the browser listing again. I left the IP alone and changed the names. That did not allow the server to reappear in the browser listing. So whatever method was used, it is tied to the IP address. All the while, my 3rd private server was online and working without any problems. So something or someone is targetting specifically the modded servers.

Come on EA. 12 minute time limit? that's crazy for a demo. When we ran unlimited time, squads can be formed and people were happy to be in squads. The work together attacking objectives and defending flags. They set up ambushes and such. But in 12 minutes, they are barely getting into the action, then the round is over. Help us help you sell your game.
Update: This was just posted on our forums, a response from EA to someone enquiring about their server:
"Modification of game files is against the EULA. Action will be taken against all users who modify game files. We will not tolerate "hackers", anyone who modifies server files will have their IP addresses banned and they will not be able to run servers for Battlefield 2. This will last for one month from the date that the user with the IP address was caught."

Heh apparently EA responded saying the no time limit and unlocked weapons is an illegal hack.

Since when is editing a single line in a config file hacking the game?
And by that same note, am I hacking the game whenever I change my controls, or display settings now?

the changing of the ex_interp config in CS is/was frowned upon, but I agree with what you are saying. I for once am enjoying playing against bots in BF2, not like any other BF game! 8)
