DropZone Interview - interview
(hx) 04:24 AM CET - Dec,09 2005 - Post a comment
Gamecloud has posted an interview with TBG Software's lead programmer Clay Fowler talking about DropZone, their futuristic tank combat action game:
Gamecloud - What kinds of tanks will be available in DropZone?

Clay Fowler - DropTeam includes a realistic mix of armored fighting vehicles ranging from recon scouts to Infantry Fighting Vehicles to Main Battle Tanks to air units. There are currently wheeled units, tracked units, and hover units, with more on the way as free downloads after the initial release.

Gamecloud - Will the playable be able to upgrade and customise their tanks and if so what options will be available? Also will the game be mod friendly in any way?

Clay Fowler - We'll answer both of these questions together since they're related. DropTeam's architecture is extremely flexible. It's built from the ground-up to be an extensible system, meaning that we (or users in the mod community) can drop new items into the game without having to change the game's code at all. For example, all vehicles within the game are represented as XML files that users can edit with a simple text editor like Notepad, changing their physical properties, their armor values, what weapons they are carrying, etc. We (or users) can also drop entirely new types of objects into the game simply by dropping new XML files into your DropTeam install folder. Along with these XML files the game can read any of a number of different media file formats (such as 3D Studio models, Truespace models, png, jpg, and bmp image files, etc.) Therefore, we are in a great position to release additional game content over time such as new units, new scenarios, new graphics, etc. Users are also free to create their own entirely new units and/or scenarios for the game since the architecture is wide open for them to "poke around with". We don't do anything in DropTeam to attempt to "hide" or encrypt any of the game's data, because we want to encourage users to have fun making modifications to the game.
