ATI X800 Announced - tech
(hx) 11:28 PM CEST - May,04 2004 - Post a comment / read (21)
ATI today officially announced the Radeon X800, their new top of the line visual processor featuring "16 parallel pixel pipes and 6 vertex pipes to process more than 8 billion pixels and almost 800 million vertices per second." There are two different versions of the card - the X800 XT Platinum Edition and the X800 PRO with the XT being the faster version:
The RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition will be powered by a 16-pipe pixel processing engine clocked at 520MHz. To take advantage of the massive pixel processing power of the RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition the product has been paired with high-speed 1.12GHz data rate GDDR3 memory and a 256-bit memory interface. The RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition will ship later this month with a suggested retail price of $499.

The RADEON X800 PRO, with a suggested retail price of $399, will be powered by a 12-pipe pixel processing engine clocked at 475MHz. A 256-bit memory interface and GDDR3 memory with a 900MHz data rate will deliver unmatched performance in its price category. The RADEON X800 PRO is shipping immediately and customers can purchase it online through major retailers in North America starting today. Customers can also purchase the RADEON X800 PRO at ATI’s online store at www.ati.com.
The first previews of ATI's Radeon X800 Pro and Radeon X800 XT can be found at AnandTech, Ascully, Beyond3D, Bjorn3D, Digit-Life, DriverHeaven, ExtremeTech, FiringSquad , Gamers Depot, Guru3D, HardOCP, Hardware Analysis, Hexus, Hot Hardware, Lost Circuits, Neoseeker, PC Perspective, Tech Report, TGH, Trusted Reviews, X-bit labs.

The ATI card looks good for the present, bad for the future. Pixel Shaders 3.0 support is basically complete crap in the ATI card. Any idea what version of Pixel Shaders that Half Life 2 will use? I hope it is not PS3.0 for ATI customers sake. And as usual, the ATI drivers for Linux are still CRAP. That said, I will still buy ATI for my Windows box unless HL2 uses Pixel Shaders 3.0.

Blah blah blah. The $500 video card does not have a bright future. There will be few buyers for it, hence few games allowing it to maximize its potential.

JSolo - like you're going to put a X800XT into a linux box. lol.

The X800XT is clocked to the max. Overclocking only yielded a 20MHz core and a 10MHz Memory O/C. That's BAD NEWS FOR ATI because nVidia announced they were going to boost the 6800U's speeds for the retail release. Come on nVidia... show us the REAL 6800U! :-)

I put my 9700 Pro into a Linux box. Why not put an X800 into the same box? I have two PCs, one of which is a dual boot box, so having support for both OSes is important to me. I can play Windows games in both operating systems, so why wouldn't I want a good driver release for both?

nvidia is going to be better and even if it loses by 7 fps, there is no way an ATI card ever goes in my machine again. anyone can do a review and tweak the machine to give either card the edge(i can do that right now!). i remember in my early days with a ati and posting genuine reviews to sites like rage3d. if ati was not a clear winner, they didn't post it. review sites in the most part are crap and if anything is never true, never trust a review thats posted on sites like NvNews or Rage3D they take whatever makes their card look better, afterall thats what their site/business is for, to push products for either company. you want reviews? search in google for any review and hopefully you find one with actual customer comments. search newsgroups and search for the card and the word problem. just cuz a card wins the fps war, doesn't necessitate that it's the best there are many possible factors to contribute to it.

I don’t really care who’s on top.. :) I just love the competition... it results in great products from both sides... Good job Nvidia.. Good job ATI.. Any chance of a price war now? :D

nice numbers from ATi. Far Cry really flies now. Glad to see that ATi pulled it off.

Why are people **STILL** buying NEW AGP!!!??? Everyone knows that it's DEAD at the end of this year and that PCI Express will be the system to have next year. wait untill near the end of the year and you'll see AGP prices dropping quicker than a prostitutes knickers! Come Nov that $400 card will be around $160 Why do you think companies like Hercules have pulled out of the card market? Bye,bye AGP RIP

I don't really care who's on top.. :) I just love the graphic card flame wars. it results in great entertainment from both sides. Good job Nvidiots. Good ATI-STINKS. Any chance of a flame war now? :D

Nvida fans can go tug off cuz thats the only gradification there geunna get.. ati rule again.. and nvidia suck as usual..

JSoloposted - May, 05 2004 - 22:17
Hmm.. I don't think Maga has a clear picture of what is going on. Yes, ATI is faster in lots of things. But, it is missing key features such as Pixel Shaders 3.0 which will make a difference in next gen games. Honestly, without ArtX, ATI would be nothing and still pumping out second rate cards like the 8500.

El_Coyoteposted - May, 05 2004 - 23:25
JSolo - you're overrating ps3.0 - ps3.0 is basicly some extensions to ps2.0 that can do the same in a bit fewer passes. ps2 can do what ps3 can - just a bit slower - and when ati's engine is a bit faster then nvidias, it all evens out in the end. and now that gabe newell says the x800 is 30% faster than the 6800, i'd say ATi still beats arse in HL2

ATI is still pumping out 8500's ... re-badged.
