ATI Radeon 9700 Announced - tech
(hx) 01:16 PM CEST - Jul,18 2002 - Post a comment / read (8)
As promised ATI today launched its R300 product line with ATI Radeon 9700 card (110 million transistors) as well as a new budget card Radeon 9000 (Pro). Although the cards are priced to perform against NVIDIA's GeForce4 MX line, their performance is more in line with the GeForce4 Ti4200 card. The Radeon 9000 cards feature a complete implementation of DirectX 8.1 as well as full vertex and pixel shader support. The Radeon 9700 will be in stores no later than 30-days from now. The card retails for a MSRP of $399 and with all that ATI has been able to show us that far, we have no reason not to believe them on this. The estimated street cost for a Radeon 9000 is $109 where the Radeon 9000 Pro is $129. The King is dead. All hail the new King! You can also check ATi 9700's articles from Toms's Hardware, AnandTech and HardOCPIn order to understand a little bit more about the Radeon 9700, GameSpy has conducted an interview with with David Nalasco, Technology Marketing Manager, and Eric Lungren, Product Manager as they anwer questions regarding to this next generation video card and the technology behind it. Here is a snip:
GameSpy: Is compatibility with DirectX 9 completely hardware dependent or can it be achieved with drivers updates?
David/Eric: It’s all hardware dependent. In the same sense that a DirectX game will run on a GeForce4 MX card, you’ll only get the features that were already available in DirectX 7. The same is true for the high-end GeForce cards. While DirectX 9 games will run on them, only the features implemented in DirectX 8.1 will be present. Features written for DirectX 9 will simply be disabled. This is because each version of DirectX has to be backwards compatible, but as new features are added [like floating point calculations], new hardware must be created to take advantage of it.

Am I the only one who sees the glaring hole here? The GeForce 4 Ti series have been out for sometime and anybody with an understanding of graphics hardware knows that the 4600 is never really pushed to its limits. ATI releases this 9700 card at the same price point as a Ti4600. Nvidia releases new Detonator drivers that open the 4600 cards open wide before or at the same time. Yet again, ATI is sucking hind tit with an overpriced, underperforming board like the original Radeon line.

Erhm.... I don't really like to spoil your fun(nVidia-fanatism) but to my knowledge the Radeon 8500 has equal performance as the GeForce 4400, yet it only costs half as much as that lame nVidia card, and then we still didn't talk about image quality....

Caelistis, its obvious you know absolutely fuck all as the ati 9700 shits all over the gf4 ti. by around 50% in most benchmarks. it will be beaten by the nv30 when that comes out but thats going to be next year. so shut the fuck up talking absolute bollocks

The Radeon 9000 cards feature a complete implementation of DirectX 8.1 as well as full vertex and pixel shader support. This card is a must buy! Imagine operating with DirectX 9, lets not talk about gaming, anyone who is looking to develop games and do hardcore programming in the future within next two year would be benefited from this card. The price is worth it!

I'm getting this card, and give it a try once its out !

OMG ! The Radeon 9700 will kick nVidia's ass, and prices will be even lower then when the GeForce4 4600 was introduced. Goodbye nVidia.

ashposted - Jul, 19 2002 - 14:03
well its not goodbye nvidia is it? considering the nv30's (geforce 5) specs absolutely wipe the floor with the new ati card. its just going to be the best card out until GF5 arrives which will probably be early next year. Christmas at best.

Without the pricy tag from nVida, this card is better and faster! Lets play!
