  • Greek ban on gaming threatens Internet cafes - A Register reader in Greece emails us claiming that the Greek government has effectively outlawed Internet cafes by "all LAN and Internet games and any kind of game that is supported by electrical, electronic or software means." If anybody so much as has something looking like a game on the screen, he tells us, the cafe manager is liable for arrest.
  • Music labels go after song-swappers - Major music companies are preparing to mount a broad new attack on unauthorized online song-swapping. The campaign would include suits against individuals who are offering the largest troves of songs on peer-to-peer services.
  • Net radio raises a pirate flag - The 39-year-old McLeod, a game designer who works out of his home in England, is the author of Streamer, a new software program designed to let people create online radio stations that are difficult for the authorities to trace.
  • cDc prepares user-friendly stego app - In an effort to help Netizens in the more paranoid corners of the world evade national censorship, the cDc's Hacktivismo group is developing a browser product called Camera/Shy capable of creating and displaying images with messages which would likely get a Web site shut down or filtered in places like Saudi Arabia and China.
  • Nanotechnology Coming! - Nanotechnology focuses on the miniature, but one thing about it is massive: the hype. Boosters have long panted about a coming age of tiny machines that will enhance human intelligence, cure disease, wipe out poverty -- and create fortunes. The National Nanotechnology Initiative, a federally backed research program, has forecast that nanotech will spawn a $1 trillion market by 2015. The froth has sparked an inevitable backlash: Some doubters now dismiss nanotech as sci-fi fantasy and a business bust in waiting.
  • Are Holograms Finally for Real? - Such startlingly lifelike projections are so compelling a technology -- as we saw when R2-D2 emitted his "Help me, Obi-Wan" hologram of Princess Leia 25 years ago in the original Star Wars -- that it's difficult to imagine a future in which they're not ubiquitous. It's the present that's the problem. Until now, holograms have been little more than second-rate gimmicks, thanks to the fact that holographically creating anything more than small, washed-out images has proved exceedingly expensive and time-consuming. But that's about to change.
  • Cartoon Inspires Student to Create a New Approach for Encryption - An unlikely combination of interests -- cartoons and math -- has inspired a sophomore at the University of Dayton to develop a new, and potentially unbreakable, encryption technology.
  • KPNQwest pulls the plug on Ebone - KPNQwest, the bankrupt Dutch telecommunications group, has begun shutting down its Ebone network, leaving up to 4,500 companies without their Internet connection.
  • Lindows OS Sucks? - Both NewsForge and BayArea.com. have posted negative Lindows reviews...
  • Sneakemail against Spam - Sneakemail is a free service that you can use to create some 'ghost e-mail addresses' which you can use when filling out online forms. Each e-mail address can be destroyed if you find that you are receiving any unwanted emails.
  • An End-To-End Look at Linux for the Playstation 2 Review - So what do you have access to? The entire graphics system is totally open. This includes the EECore(CPU), VU0 & VU1(Vector coprocessors), GS (Graphics Processor), IPU (Mpeg decoder/texture manager), FPU(Floating point coprocessor), and the interconnecting controllers, (DMA, Video/graphics interface controllers) You also have access to the documentation, but it's limited. Read more.
  • Microsoft gets into PC hardware business - A report in the Economic News claims that Microsoft and FIC will jointly launch a so-called "Dream PC" which doesn't even use an Intel chip, but instead makes use of a Via C3. The report claims that the first jointly developed "Dream PC" will be introduced towards the end of this month and that Microsoft will also show quite a few so called "baseline" or cheap machines which run with Via C3 600MHz chips and Windows XP.
  • PCExpo / TechXNY 2002 Coverage - PC Stats has published their PCExpo / TechXNY 2002 coverage.
  • Chaintech GeForce 4 Ti4200  - It seems to me that nearly all the manufacturers are using the reference Ti-4200 design to shorten time-to-market and to cut down R&D costs. The use of black PCB and golden HSF gives a refreshing look to this card. I am sure that case modders would love it.
  • ABIT BD7II-RAID & BG7 Review - ABIT BD7II-RAID is based on Intel 845E chipset while BG7 is based on Intel 845G chipset and both officially support 533Mhz system bus and the new ICH4 Southbridge that support six USB 2.0 ports and 6 channels 20-Bit AC'97 audio codec. BG7 is integrated with Intel Extreme Graphics and the support of DDR333 which will enhance system performance further. However, DDR333 is not officially supported by Intel now but the next upcoming 845PE/GE chipsets. As usual, the boards sport a light brown PCB and are lightly featured with LAN, USB 2.0, 5.1 Channel Audio and RAID (BD7II-RAID only). We will check out in details the board features, BIOS settings, overclockability as well as performance.
  • Pioneer DVD-106S DVD Drive Review - Pioneer Electronics, famous for their hi-fi and home theater components such as the prestigious Pioneer Elite line of receivers and DVD players has also ventured into making optical drives for the computer industry. Their slot loading CD drives are a hit among various OEM manufacturers such as Compaq and have been used in their systems for quite sometime. The latest Pioneer optical drive to hit the market is their DVD-106S DVD/CD-ROM drive which also features the same slot loading mechanism found on the other Pioneer models.
  • Lian Li PC-9300 review - I've just checked out Lian Li's entrant in the very very stylish desktop case, or alternatively computer that won't look too out-of-place among your hi-fi components sector of the market. The PC-9300 has more features, and more extras, than you might expect. And it's not nearly as hilariously expensive as the last case of this type I reviewed.
  • AMD Overclocking Database - Tweakers Australia has just updated their AMD CPU overclocking database with some new additions including the new Duron 'Morgan' based processors, as well as the XP2200+ processor.
  • Terminator III Teaser - The teaser trailer (70seconds) for Terminator III - Rise Of The Machines has been released over on Quicktime Trailers. If wanna see some PICS, here is link1 and link2 :P I love the first two Terminators, and I'm hoping that T3 rocks.

Re: Cartoon inspires student to create a new approach for Encryption. This is not a new idea really. William Gibson wrote a book some time ago in which a courier transported what was essentially an encrypted message in a cartoon picture. This simply takes the NSA's usage of jigsaw puzzles to test out new encryption techniques to a different level.
