TechNews - Windows 10 April 2019 Update Brings Linux File Access - tech|
(hx) 10:55 PM CET - Feb,17 2019 |
- AMD Matisse & Navi Target Release Date & Intel Comet
Lake Info - Intel's Comet Lake will be a 10 core part that
launches in the first quarter of 2020, and will be aiming to increase
single core performance while holding off AMD's Matisse platform.
Matisse will launch july 7th, along with the x570
platform and also Navi (assuming TSMC can keep up). We'll see a
minimum of 12 cores, but AMD's partners are expecting 16 cores for the
Am4 platform, with aggressive clock speed support.
- Submersion Cooling with my Small Novec Demo - A 3M
employee demoed a CPU cooled with a low-boiling-point liquid years ago,
and since then, some server manufacturers have shown off similar
systems. But this year, that same 3M employee decided to build a more compact version of the
original demo
- FFXV Benchmark: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti on Par with GTX
1070, Titan X - According to a new Final
Fantasy XV benchmark, NVIDIA’s next Ti effort performs similarly to a
GTX 1070 and Titan X. VideoCardz has published photos of the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 Ti OC and packaging.
- Office 365 vs. Office 2019 - which one will win? - Designing
your deck should take minutes, not hours. Twins Tanny and Cynni go
head-to-head planning their urban garden and creating polished
presentations. One of the twins uses Office 365, the other Office
2019 - which one will finish first?
- Windows 10 Will Finally Offer Easy Access to Linux Files - Working with Linux files in the Windows environment is
comparable to running through a field with landmines, but that
will change with Windows 10’s April 2019 Update, which brings support
for "accessing, viewing, and even modifying Windows
Subsystem for Linux (WSL) files from File Explorer or via the command
line." Users simply have to enter "explorer.exe" into a Bash shell.
"Use drag and drop, copy and paste them, or even open them directly in
Windows applications to modify them."
- Google Backtracks on Chrome Modifications That Would Have
Crippled Ad Blockers - A-blocker developers
(and users) can rest easy, as Google has decided to revise its
collection of changes to the Chrome extensions platform. "Manifest V3"
would have killed uBlock, Ghostery, and similar extensions by
disallowing them from querying remotely hosted code via traditional
APIs, but Google has had a change of heart due to backlash and new data
suggesting ad-blocking requests didn’t have a significant effect
on browser performance.
- Google Maps Augmented Reality Creates Navigation - Someday,
when we start buying AR glasses, persistent AR directions might make a
lot of sense. And directions aren't the sole point either. AR maps could help you learn more about everything you
pass. Tory Smith, product strategy lead for autonomous vehicles at
Mapbox, a navigation startup, envisions a possible future in which your
windshield could display the nearest parking garage, then tell you how
many spots are open, how much it costs and whether there's a good
coffee shop nearby. You might someday navigate indoors--where GPS
doesn't work--using AR maps, with Google Translate instantly turning
every sign you pass into your own language.
- Website Uses AI to Generate the Faces of People Who Don't
Exist - Will the real-life version of Skynet model its Terminators
after real people? That's up in the air, as currently existing AI is already capable of crafting convincing faces all
on its own. Software developer Philip Wang has launched a website
called thispersondoesnotexist
that proves this, allowing visitors to generate incredibly convincing
but falsified human heads on every page refresh with the help of a
powerful GPU and NVIDIA machine learning code.
- Researchers, scared by their own work, hold back 'deepfakes for
- OpenAI, a non-profit research company investigating "the path to
safe artificial intelligence," has developed a machine learning system
called Generative Pre-trained Transformer-2 (GPT-2 ), capable of
generating text based on brief writing prompts. The result comes so
close to mimicking human writing that it could potentially be used for
"deepfake" content. Built based on 40 gigabytes of text retrieved from
sources on the Internet (including "all outbound links from Reddit, a
social media platform, which received at least 3 karma"), GPT-2
generates plausible "news" stories and other text that match the style
and content of a brief text prompt.
The performance of the system was so disconcerting, now the
researchers are only releasing a reduced version of GPT-2 based on
a much smaller text corpus.
- Hackers destroy all of VFEmail's US customers' data - Unknown
intruders have breached servers of US-based email provider VFEmail.net and destroyed all the data of its US
customers in what the company has described as a "catastrophic
destruction". According to VFEmail, hackers did not demand a ransom,
nor attempt to steal users' confidential data, so the motive behind the
damage would appear to be sabatage, although the reason is unclear at
the moment. The attack occurred on 11th February and was detected after
VFEmail's website and webmail client went down all of a sudden. Later,
VFEmail posted a message on Twitter stating that its external-facing
systems across multiple data centres had gone offline. After about two
hours, the company revealed that its backup server had been formatted
by an unknown attacker. The damage, Romero reported, extended to
VFEmail's "entire infrastructure," including mail hosts, virtual
machine hosts, and a SQL server cluster.
- Several PWAs in the Microsoft Store found to be mining
cryptocurrencies - In
a blog post, U.S.-based cybersecurity firm Symantec has
meticulously detailed how it found at least eights free apps - now
removed by Microsoft - in the Store that utilized the CPU's resources
to mine cryptocurrencies without the permission of the user.
- The Samsung Galaxy S10 is coming! Here's what to expect - Samsung's
mainline flagships, the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus, will still
clearly share plenty of design DNA with the Galaxy S8, S9, Note8, and
Note9 from the past two years. This year though, the devices are going
to be leading the way in the mobile industry with a lot of "firsts" (or
at least, "among the firsts"). In the US, the Galaxy S10 will be one of
the first phones with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. It'll be one
of the first phones with a hole-punch camera cutout instead of a notch.
This will be our first look at Qualcomm's ultrasonic in-screen
fingerprint reader, and it will be one of the first devices with Wi-Fi
6 compatibility. At the very highest configuration, it will be the
first phone with a whopping one terabyte storage
- Google Keyboard for iOS Adds Haptic Feedback - Google's
newest version of Gboard --it's keyboard-replacement app for iOS - adds
physical feedback when typing. Apple's own iOS keyboard does not offer
this popular feature. The haptic feedback feature is available on
iPhone 7 and later. Gboard also offers input by word swipe and voice.
It includes emoji (with search), GIFs, stickers, and personalized
stickers. Google search is built-in and results - such as business
listings, videos, images, and articles - can easily be pasted and sent
to others. The new version is 1.4 and is available now in the Apple
App Store.
- Razer Shutting Its Digital Game Store This Month, Less than a
Year after It Opened - Razer has announced
its game store would "cease operations on February 28, 2019 at 0100hrs
Pacific Time as part of the company’s realignment plans." The store originally opened in April 2018, less
than a year ago. Games will still be offered through the company’s
virtual credits and loyalty rewards system, Razer Gold and Silver.
- AT&T Promises 5G for Chicago, Minneapolis in 2019 - AT&T today
added Chicago and Minneapolis to its list of cities that will get a
true 5G network by the end of this year. That list already includes Las
Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and
San Jose. The company already has 5G available to a limited group of
customers in "parts of" Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston,
Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans,
Raleigh, San Antonio, and Waco. The company plans to launch 5G
nationwide by "early 2020". This true (standards-based, mmWave) 5G
network is not yet available to most consumers, and no phones have
launched yet that support 5G. AT&T is currently running a
misleading campaign to promote "5G E", which is actually 4G LTE. Sprint
is currently taking AT&T to court over that campaign

Don't matter because Office 2019 does not really bring anything new over Office 2016 (for the regular users at least) - so noone sane in their mind will pay for the same product all over again; they'll stick to Office 2016.

CPUs don't make a whole lot of heat.
Try that setup with a GPU. I wonder what happens when all the liquid evaporates... Tank blows?
quote: Windows 10 Will Finally Offer Easy Access to Linux Files
Why not just call it Winux? It's no longer Windows anyway.

How would they know it's people that don't exist?

I guess they'd make good lawyers.

How is that news?

can't wait to see how many people finally get hospitalized over 5G. I mean, if it kills birds, it must be good for humans. Then again, Chicago, no one will notice, probably. | |
