TechNews - iPad Air 2, Mac Upgrades - tech
(hx) 11:28 AM CEST - Oct,18 2014
  • Nexus 9 vs iPad Air 2 - Spec Comparison - Planning to buy a new tablet in the very near future? If yes, your list of tablets to look at probably includes the newly unveiled Google Nexus 9 from HTC and the Apple iPad Air 2. The iPad Air 2's display is almost an inch larger than that of the Nexus 9. But the Google tablet wins here with a higher pixel density. The iPad Air 2 is coming equipped with an 8MP camera along with some "image optimisation" tools, and the Nexus 9 also features the same shooter. But HTCfs tablet is slightly better at taking selfies than the iPad Air 2, which has a FaceTime camera (1.2MP). The Nexus 9 features a 1.6MP front camera. But the front cameras on both the tablets should have been better.
  • Google Shows Off Nexus 6 Smartphone, Nexus 9 Tablet  -Google has announced Android 5.0 Lollipop and with it the first few devices to run the new operating system, the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9. The Nexus 6 is a large-screened smartphone made by Motorola. It has an aluminum frame and a 6-inch quad HD display with a 13-megapixel main camera. The camera includes optical image stabilization and HDR+ for improved low-light shots. The device has stereo-speakers with high-fidelity sound and comes with a turbo charger for fast charging. Google claims the device can get up to six hours of battery time after plugging it in for just 15 minutes. The Nexus 6 will be available for pre-order in late October and in stores in November. Google will sell an unlocked version through the Play Store, and the Nexus 6 will also be sold by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless. The device costs $649 at full retail, which is $200 more than the Nexus 5. The Nexus 9 tablet is made by HTC and features an 8.9-inch 2048 x 1536 screen with a brushed aluminum design. It is run by a dual-core Tegra K1 64-bit processor with each core clocked at 2.3GHz. Other features include an 8.0-/1.6-megapixel camera configuration; BoomSound speakers; dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, and LTE; and a 6,700mAh battery. The Nexus 9 will be available for pre-order on October 17 and in stores starting November 3. The Wi-Fi model starts at $399.
  • Google Names Android 5.0 Lollipop - Google has said the next version of Android, which it has so far referred to only as Release L, will be called Android 5.0 Lollipop. Google previewed Lollipop earlier this year and has offered it in beta form to developers for several months. It includes a refreshed look and feel that Google calls Material Design. Google has been slowly updating the core Android apps with Material Design over the last few weeks. In Lollipop, Google has re-envisioned the lock screen to incorporate more of the notifications, as well as the ability to automatically unlock the device when a trusted wearable is nearby. Lollipop will also offer a new keyboard design. Moving forward, Lollipop will rely on the ART runtime engine instead of Dalvik, which has served for several years. Google says ART offers a two-times improvement in app performance across the platform. ART is also more memory efficient, and is optimized 64-bit processing. The platform includes the Android Extension Pack to improve graphics performance. Google took time to improve the platform's efficiency, too. Project Volta, for example, took aim at helping OEMs and developers improve battery life by more optimizing their apps. Further, Lollipop adds its own Battery Saver tool to help extend the life of a battery when it reaches critical levels. Lollipop builds in more malware protection and ways for Android users to secure their device and make sure apps are scanned for safety. For example, Google is adding a kill switch to Lollipop, which allows device owners to remotely disable their handset if it is lost or stolen. Android 5.0 Lollipop will be available on the Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet when they debut later this year.
  • $65 Windows tablets show up in Hong Kong - There are cheap Windows tablets and then there are cheap Windows tablets and thanks to the HKTDC show in Hong Kong, we are now seeing devices that cost as little as $65. That price represents a new entry-level, well below the $81 price of the most affordable Windows 8.1 tablet previously announced - but what you get for that price is nothing short of bare-bones entry level equipment. So what does this low cost actually get you? You will get a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and an Intel Z3735G quad-core Bay Trail processor. The device is called the EM-i8170, and it is manufactured by Emdoor, which unveiled another low-cost Windows 8.1 device earlier this year - the $99 8-inch EM-i8080, which includes integrated 3G connectivity. The $65 price may represent the cost at which the manufacturer sells these devices to other companies, who then re-brand them under their own identity which means that we could see a sizeable markup on top of these prices before the tablets actually go on sale. If this is true, the price for consumers may well be on-par with other entry level tablets.
  • Apple Announces iPad Air 2, Mac Upgrades - Apple has unveiled the iPad 2 Air, along with upgrades to its operating system, Yosemite, and a high-resolution iMac.
  • Apple Debuts New Multi-Carrier SIM Card in iPad Air 2 - Apple has revealed the iPad Air 2, and along with it a new way to handle SIM cards. According to Apple, the new Apple SIM gives iPad Air 2 owners unprecedented flexibility when it comes to choosing an LTE service provider. "Whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you -- with no long-term commitment," explained Apple. "And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip." The multi-carrier SIM is compatible with AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S., as well as EE in the U.K. The iPad Air 2 supports 20 different LTE bands, similar to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The carriers named by Apple have not yet discussed the particulars regarding no-contract data plans. There's no word on why Verizon Wireless isn't included in the list of U.S. carriers. It's possible that the Apple SIM will find its way to future Apple products, including its iPhones.
  • Apple Says iOS 8.1 Is About Stomping Out Bugs - Apple has revealed details about iOS 8.1, an update to its smartphone and tablet platform. iOS 8.1 targets numerous bugs that have caused issues for iPhone and iPad owners since its debut, such as connectivity and crashing. As far as new features, iOS 8.1 adds support for Apple Pay and includes the public beta of iCloud Photo Library for sharing photos. The update also brings back the camera roll within the photo application. Apple said iOS 8.1 will be available for download beginning Monday, October 20.  In addition, Apple has announced that Apple Pay will go live Monday, October 20. Apple Pay is Apple's NFC-based mobile payment service. The service hooks into iPhone owners' iTunes accounts and the associated credit cards. Apple Pay will also (eventually) work with cards issued by more than 500 banks across 220,000 locations operated by dozens of retailers. Apple Pay is limited to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus due to their embedded NFC radios. Apple Pay also works on the web, and can be used to make purchases from select online services.
  • Apple unveils updated Mac mini starting at $499 - Apple has finally got around to upgrading their popular Mac mini. The new Mac mini now starts off at just $499 for a basic 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) with 3MB on-chip shared L3 cache model with 4GB of memory and goes up to a $999 version which ships with a 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 and includes a 1TB fusion drive and 8GB of memory. The basic model also comes with Intel HD Graphics 5000, while the mid-range and top end Mac mini ship with Intel's Iris Graphics for better performance. All versions of the Mac mini now come with 802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless networking, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, four USB 3 ports, HDMI and a SDXC card slot. Apple also called it the "World's most energy efficient desktop", though until we get hold of one, we will take this with a grain of salt.
  • How to fix a bent iPhone 6 (Tutorial) - PeripateticPandas is back with a fix! ROFL
  • Skype Debuts Qik Video Messaging App - Skype has announced a new video messaging app called Qik. The service, explains Skype, is to give smartphone users a fun way to interact with others and maintain conversations that have more personality than standard text messages or video calls. Qik users can record and send up to 42 seconds of video to recipients who can then respond with video messages of their own. Skype says videos remain live for just two weeks, and can be erased by the creator at any time. Qik also lets users prerecord five-second Qik Fliks, which Qik describes as canned video responses to use when there's no time to record a new video. Qik used to exist as a stand-alone messaging service, but was purchased by Skype in 2011 and later shuttered entirely. Skype Qik is available to Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. The app is free to download from each platform's respective app store.
  • Russian hackers use zero-day Windows exploit to spy on NATO, EU, US - Russian hackers have been using a zero-day exploit in Windows to spy on numerous high-ranking agencies across the EU and the world. Among those affected we have NATO, several Western governments, EU energy and telecommunications companies and even an undisclosed US academic organizations. This report, cited by the New York Times, comes from a cybersecurity company named iSight. As such all caveats, pinches of salt and regular skepticism in the face of dire warnings should apply. iSight reports that a number of hackers have found and started exploiting a zero day vulnerability found in Windows. According to them, while the hacking group with probable ties to the Russian government has been active for years, this specific vulnerability in Microsoft's OS has only been exploited in the last couple of months. Apparently the exploit is present in all supported versions of Windows starting with Vista an ending with Windows 8.1. It's probably in Windows 10 Technical Preview as well but that version isn't officially supported just yet.
  • YouTube has potentially infected over 100,000 users - According to Trend Micro, they have been monitoring the activity on YouTube over the past couple of months and have found that the attack comes in the form of ads that are present on the site. While the ads themselves have no malicious content, the issue seems to occur when the ad is clicked. Although these ads should be monitored and screened by YouTube, some have seemed to slip through the cracks, redirecting to malicious websites that could cause infections. While this all sounds fairly simple, the actually process for passing off a malicious site for something legitimate is fairly complex. The exploit kit seems to target Java, Internet Explorer, and Flash. Luckily, those that keep their OS up to date will not be exposed to this infection as Microsoft has patched the vulnerability in May of 2013. It's also probably a good idea to make sure that you update your Adobe and Java products to their latest available editions. It is unknown how long these ads will remain on YouTube, but their team will hopefully have the issue patched soon.
  • New Breed of ATM Hack Emerges - Rather than poke around and drain individual accounts, Kaspersky Labs discovered that hackers have gone straight to the source and just drain the cash directly from the main account of the ATM. Saves time and time is money, especially for thieves.
  • AT&T Improves International Plans - AT&T has rolled out new service plans for use when traveling abroad. Under the new AT&T Passport plans, customers pay a one-time monthly fee for 30 days of access to international voice minutes, messaging, and data. The plans automatically expire. Each includes unlimited messaging and unlimited access to AT&T's Wi-Fi hotspots. The least expensive option costs $30 and includes 120MB of data and $1-per-minute voice calls. The $60 option improves the data allotment to 300MB and drops the per-minute cost of voice calls to $0.50. The $120 option boosts data to 800MB and drops the per-minute cost of voice calls to $0.35. Before today, AT&T required customers to select separate voice, messaging, and data plans when traveling abroad. The new plans combine all three services in a less-expensive package. AT&T said its month-to-month AT&T Global rates are still available to those who travel frequently and need access beyond 30 days. Data-only Passport and Global packages are also available for tablets, laptops, and other data-only devices.
  • Americans shocked their govt owns Ebola patent - For IN the NOW with Anissa Naouai, The Resident hit the streets of New York City to ask people whether or not they were scared that a known case of Ebola has just been found in Texas. She challenges people on their knowledge of the virus, only to find out that not many Americans know their government has the patent on Ebola, or that it has been sitting on several promising vaccines because no company or government wants to pay for the final stages of FDA approval, remaining clinical trials, and manufacturing of the vaccine. Now that Ebola has reached the states, perhaps people will start paying more attention.

  • Citizenfour Official Trailer 1 (2014) - Edward Snowden Documentary - HBO, Radius-TWC & Participant Media have premiered a trailer for Laura Poitras & journalist Glenn Greenwald's documentary Citizenfour. Described as an "utterly riveting first-person look" at how they "first met with whistleblower Edward Snowden in Hong Kong", the doc is a highly anticipated expose on Snowden's decisions and implications, captured as an "unprecedented fly-on-the-wall account of one of the most groundbreaking moments in recent history." The trailer is more of a tease with a grating slow-read voiceover to start, and right when it gets to the interesting part with Snowden it cuts to the title. I'm definitely seeing this doc, but I wish they gave us a bit more to view here. That said, this may still capture your attention!
