Xbox Emulator Plays Retail Game - briefly

The critically acclaimed Xbox Emulator, CXBX, has finally made its way into Xbox history. CXBX creator Caustik has announced that "Turok Evolution" is now playable at real-time speed with comparable graphics to the Xbox while utilizing nearly the same graphics hardware found within the Xbox itself. "These screenshots are taken on his GeForce FX 5600 (2.8 GHz P4). Turok is completely playable and suffers from only mild glitches like missing polygons and water effects. The gameplay is very smooth, frames per second are real-time. It is even possible to overclock Cxbx and play at 4x+ speed without choking the system." The development of CXBX will continue to advance at rapid pace. Expect many additional titles to become playable upon the release of the next binary in the near future. (thanks Slashdot.org)

You guys do realize that he chose a relatively easy (graphics-wise) game and even that suffered from missing polygons and effects. Also, I am not sure how much of this depends on using "nearly the same graphics hardware". If it's a requirement for the emulator to have a certain graphics card (or at least chipset) this won't fly.

he's rigth our pc's are better tehn xbox but xbox games are not ment for pc ..so that means slowness ... dont even bother..

chris, you do realise you're a fool since the XBOX uses nothing revolutionary in-terms of hardware, seeing as it's practically a PC anyways. Please explain to me how it would mean slowness in the longrun? lol

XBOX can handle the graphics not because of using "something revolutionary" - but because the hardware is standardized. It's the same with all consoles. If this emulator is only going to do a half decent job and will only do it with specific hardware requirements, thanks but no thanks :)

im sorry disillusioned, but you really have no idea what your talking about. Don't take it the wrong way or anything...this isn't meant as a personal attack. And to all of your complaining of slowness, remember that with more work and optimization it will speed up to full speed or more.

now xbox needs some serious good games wich arent out for pc :) maybe its useful in the future for gta or something but right now i cant think of any game wich isnt available for pc also

I dont understand why console companies themselves dont make emulators and sell em for like $50. The could make for money from the PC market instead of trying to spend more money on anti piracy techniques (Nintendo) which dont work.

To GoldenBear: I am sorry man, but I do have a pretty good idea of what I am talking about. I think you are the one who is not getting what I am trying to say. I never said it will be slow, I said it might be a bit too hardware specific as a solution (check out the parts they talk about having hardware close to whats in XBOX). Also, not emulating something right, for example missing polygons, water effects, etc, does not mean it's slow. It just means it's crappy :) I believe other than these two complaints their speed is not bad (at least they claim so). To Giggler: XBOX, just like other consoles, depend on the sales of it's games to make money. Every console sold is actually money lost for those companies (of course this turns into a profit when they sell the games to that new console owner). Therefore, it's not really profitable for them to let people play games on PC where copying games is so very easy and they have no way of having hardware copy protection at a level even close to what's on the consoles.

But it's so much easier to play an image from my 200 gig hd. :D That's why emulators don't fly with console makers.

for those who think xbox emulation is possible for computer, you are wrong. The processer for the emulator has to be like at least 100 times better than the original console for it to run successfully. u can just think that just because two systems are similer that it would work. the coding for the games is completly different. Thats like saying ps2 games can play on xbox. its impossible. dont even argue it unless u can successfully code games for consoles (bs), then maybe i will believe u.

Ok disillusioned, I misunderstood what you were trying to say. And yes, the emulation as it is now is crappy but it is a work in progress. The author didn't throw this out claiming it was done. He just put it out so people could see his progress. This is why major software companies don't release alphas of their programs because people get the wrong idea about how it will be in the end.

Ok, I must have meant that uw123 doesn't know what he's talking about. So, as a future CompSci major im gonna try to pass what i know (which isn't that much, believe me) on. The X-Box uses a 733mhz Pentium III processor, similar to the ones we had years ago. Thus the X-Box uses the same x86 technology that is in your computer now (most likely). In fact, all the components in the X-Box are nearly identical to what PC users can get though some are slightly modified to fit a console a bit better. Most of them still use the same instructions but run under a different OS (stripped down WinXP maybe?). As far as that 100x better than console theory, that is usually close to correct for other consoles that use custom processors and custom graphics chips. Playstation1 & 2 use custom CPUs. Dreamcast uses a 128bit CPU that does things that would take up to 4 instructions for a 32bit CPU (like most PCs have) to execute. And consoles like Sega Saturn, that has two CPUs are even more difficult to emulate. The only real difficulty is getting various types of hardware to emulate the Intel CPU and nVidia GPU (most difficult for Ati GPUs and AMD CPUs).

Singularity - PC, PS3, Xbox 360 - Raven have stated that Singularity's main gameplay mechanism is a device, known in the game as the TMD (Time Manipulation Device). The TMD has the ability to move a single object through time, both into the future, and into the past.
